About Jinghualou Restaurant
Jinghualou is a top notch Beijing restaurant located on the central axis of Beijing, the ancient capital of China's Five Dynasties. Now it is managed by the heirs of the old imperial kitchen. During the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, the country finally opened its doors to the world, and Western culture poured in. The designer combined the context of the Forbidden City and the elegance of Western culture and successfully drew a picture of ukiyo-e of the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China through an art of design.
Tong Xu's Jinghualou Restaurant reception hall emerges from a rich tradition of hospitality design that draws upon centuries of East Asian architectural philosophy while embracing contemporary spatial sensibilities, creating an environment where the act of arrival becomes itself a form of cultural immersion and aesthetic preparation for the dining experience to follow. The designer demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to the dialogue between materials, orchestrating a conversation between the tactile roughness of traditional gray brick masonry and the warmth of terracotta accent courses that reference vernacular building traditions of significant historical depth. The luminous golden screen commanding the central wall functions simultaneously as artwork, spatial focal point, and cultural signifier, its ink-wash pine imagery evoking the scholarly traditions of landscape painting while the gold-leaf ground establishes an atmosphere of refined celebration appropriate to occasions of gathering and feasting. Technical accomplishment is evident throughout the space, from the precision of the coffered ceiling joinery to the careful placement of concealed lighting that transforms structural arches into glowing portals, each detail contributing to an overall composition of remarkable visual coherence. The juxtaposition of the intricately carved rosewood cabinet against the pristine white marble counter exemplifies the design philosophy at work, pairing the rich cultural associations of traditional furniture forms with contemporary material expressions in a synthesis that honors heritage while serving present needs. The emerald banker's lamps introduce an unexpected chromatic note that enlivens the warm palette while suggesting the scholarly and commercial traditions that have long characterized hospitality establishments of distinction. Viewers might consider how the bilateral symmetry and processional axis of the space choreograph movement and anticipation, transforming the practical function of reception into an experience of contemplative transition from the exterior world into a realm of curated beauty and cultural engagement.

- During the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, the country finally opened its doors to the world, and Western culture poured in. The cultures from the East and the West, the South and the North, started to blend with each other. With the drastic changes in history, the royal court had also stepped out of the high red wall and started immersing in other cultures.

- Behind the golden screen is the greeting hall with two-crane on both sides listening to a spring. Right in the middle is the Taihu Lake Stone welcoming guests from all parts of the world. In the subtle gradations of light and shadow, you can sip a little by the stone or have a bite next to the bonsai. Guests can enjoy the exquisite plating of royal dish, and every one of them share the equal distance from the Stone, so they are equally taken as the guests of honor.
- Design Challenge
- The site of the project is located on the second floor, without the exclusive traffic passage. In order to increase the convenience of customers, the designer added stairs and elevators and expanded the foyer, and the restaurant has an independent entrance and commercial image.
- Project Duration
- The project started in November 2021 and finished in October 2022 in Beijing.
- Operation Flow
- Like the traditional restaurants outside crowded Qianmen, Jinghualou has the breathtaking blue walls and green tiles, which can be seen through bright glass screens. Passing through the entrance you can go up the stairs on both sides, and reach the main hall on the 2nd floor. The glittering crystal lamps shine upon the golden antique screen with Ink Colored Pine Forest and light up the entire reception. The pavillions and gardens surrounding it give out a noble touch of an aristocratic lifestyle.

- Zhouxuan, the most famous singer in the Republic of China, sang a song to best describe a happy experience of having a drink at Jinghualou, "The moon shines brightly in the sky as the clouds are gone. We are here with each other to drink the wine, until we drink to our heart’s content."
