About Jellybelly Artwork

Jellybelly is a fine art photography series that portrays jellyfish. The images were taken inside a large aquarium at night, in complete darkness. Only a few artificial lights inside and outside the aquarium were used, giving the jellyfish a subtle glow. The series aims to capture the elegant movement and aesthetic of a species that is also an indicator of water quality. Each image is printed on fine art paper, mounted on aluminium and set in a black oak frame with a two centimetre shadow gap. Two limited editions are offered, sized 50 by 50 cm and 80 by 80 cm.

This award-winning photographic work by Florian W. Mueller enters into dialogue with traditions of scientific illustration, underwater documentary photography, and contemporary art photography that seeks transcendence through encounters with natural phenomena, positioning the humble moon jellyfish as a vehicle for aesthetic contemplation and philosophical reflection on life's extraordinary diversity of forms, the technical accomplishment of the image lies in its masterful balance between documentary fidelity to the subject's actual appearance and artistic enhancement that elevates the creature into a luminous apparition against infinite darkness, Mueller demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how chromatic relationships between warm internal tones and cool peripheral hues can create spatial depth and visual fascination within what might otherwise register as simple wildlife documentation, the soft gradation of edges particularly along the trailing oral arms achieves an almost painterly quality suggesting the influence of Pictorialist photography while maintaining the precision associated with contemporary digital capture and processing, thematically the work invites meditation on the paradox of fragility and resilience embodied by jellyfish species that have persisted through hundreds of millions of years of evolutionary history yet possess no centralized nervous system or complex organs, the isolation of this single organism against the enveloping void evokes both the sublime scale of oceanic environments and the precious singularity of each living creature, viewers might consider how this ancient life form, composed almost entirely of water, achieves such remarkable beauty through the simplest of biological architectures, and what such encounters with non-human consciousness might teach us about the multiple expressions of existence that share our planetary home.

Production Technology
The pictures were shot in a big aquarium where the artist had the permisson to work and shoot during the night in complete darkness. Only some artificial lights inside the aquarium and from the outside were just to give the jellifishes some subtile glow.
Inspiration
Jellyfishes are one of the most fascinating species in the oceans. There are jellyfish whose aging process is virtually non-existent, theoretically, if they are not eaten, they could live forever. Jellyfish move very elegantly, are important for the entire marine ecosystem and are an indicator of water quality. And they have a certain aesthetics.
