About Ink and Ivory Harmony Residence
Ink and Ivory Harmony is a residential interior design of about 73 square meters in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The layout was changed from four bedrooms into three bedrooms to give each area more space. The gaming room was combined with the collection room, and the worship room was merged with the multifunctional room. The plan is prepared for present and future needs, as the home may later be shared with family members. The design draws on the game of Go, with black and white tones and a curved chandelier above the central island.
This residential interior composition invites contemplation of how contemporary spatial design achieves poetic dimension through the integration of sculptural illumination within restrained architectural frameworks, demonstrating sophisticated material restraint characteristic of minimalist design traditions that privilege clarity, calm, and carefully calibrated visual emphasis. The space appears to engage thoughtfully with multiple design lineages, drawing upon the spatial clarity and material honesty found within mid-century modern traditions, the tonal subtlety and natural material reverence associated with Scandinavian design principles, and the contemplative spatial organization characteristic of Japanese-influenced residential aesthetics where negative space functions as actively as occupied zones. The compositional achievement centers on the masterful calibration of visual weight and chromatic temperature, wherein the warm amber sculptural luminaire suspended in the upper register establishes both literal and symbolic illumination, its flowing calligraphic form suggesting ink brushwork frozen mid-gesture, creating dynamic movement within an otherwise rectilinear architectural container defined by clean horizontal and vertical planes. This formal gesture demonstrates considerable design confidence, introducing organic curvature and saturated warmth into a predominantly orthogonal cool-toned environment without disrupting the overall sense of visual repose. The chromatic sophistication emerges through disciplined restraint, building the foundational palette from subtle variations within the neutral spectrum ranging from soft pearl whites through multiple gradations of gray to deep charcoal and matte black, then introducing carefully measured warm accents through the luminaire's amber glow, the cognac leather pillow, and the golden honey tones of the small terrestrial globe, creating chromatic punctuation that guides the eye through the composition while maintaining overall tonal harmony. The spatial organization reveals thoughtful attention to functional zoning within an open plan, delineating distinct activity areas for dining in the foreground and lounging in the middle ground while preserving visual connection and spatial flow, suggesting a residential environment designed for both solitary contemplation and intimate social gathering. The material palette speaks to contemporary values of understated luxury achieved through quality and restraint rather than ostentation, pairing matte architectural surfaces with soft textiles, reflective lacquered furnishings with warm wood flooring, creating tactile variety that enriches the spatial experience while maintaining visual coherence. The window treatment of horizontal blinds introduces a rhythm of light and shadow, filtering natural daylight into soft graduated striations that animate the background plane while providing privacy and glare control, demonstrating how functional elements can simultaneously serve aesthetic purposes. The left-hand display niche, subtly illuminated and sparsely populated with a dark sculptural form and minimal botanical specimens, exemplifies the minimalist principle that emptiness possesses visual and spatial value, that restraint in display creates emphasis for what remains, and that negative space allows individual objects to achieve sculptural presence rather than competing within visual clutter. One might observe how this interior environment proposes a particular relationship between inhabitant and space, suggesting that contemporary domestic life can achieve sanctuary quality through deliberate reduction, through the elimination of visual noise in favor of essential elements thoughtfully composed, and through the recognition that light itself, when sculpted and orchestrated with intention, transcends mere functional illumination to become atmospheric presence, emotional modulator, and artistic gesture, inviting viewers to consider how their own living environments might benefit from similar principles of restraint, material honesty, and the integration of sculptural light as both functional necessity and poetic device that transforms ordinary residential space into curated experience.

- The master bedroom was designed with dark colors as the focal point. The gray base with dark wood grain not only added depth to the visual space, but also created a comfortable and stable atmosphere for the residents to rest.
- Design Challenge
- In the combined gaming and collection room, RGB lights were used as the foundation to create a magical gaming atmosphere. Recessed lights with natural light sources were utilized as lighting fixtures in the display cabinets to highlight the colors of the GK figurines, turning them into colorful wall decorations.
- Project Duration
- The project was completed in New Taipei City, Taiwan, in October 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The stunning curved chandelier suspended above the central island serves as a powerful symbol, representing the aspiration to be a dragon in the game of Go and conveying well wishes for the owner's success in both the game and his career.
- Research
- The foyer was designed to address the feng shui issues of a narrow space and the through the door brake. The team utilized a skeleton design to reduce the pressure and sense of closure in the space. Additionally, long rainbow glass was used to avoid the feng shui concern of looking directly into the living room upon entering. Mirrors were also placed on the sidewalls to create a broader feeling of space. Various design techniques and material elements were incorporated to add depth to the area.
- Inspiration
- The design of this project draws inspiration from the rich symbolism and aesthetics of the game of Go, which holds special significance for the owner. The layout takes cues from the points, lines, and surfaces of the Go board, while the dominant color palette reflects the iconic black and white tones of the game.
