About Greatest Luck Residence
The couple, along with their two children, values a modern design that supports family life, learning, and social gatherings. Drawing inspiration from their time in Korea, they created a guest area in the basement, capturing the ambiance of Korean restaurants while maintaining a quiet space for their children. The first floor features an open kitchen with light tones and clean lines, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Upstairs, modern aesthetics and personalized bedrooms for the children ensure a balance of function and comfort.
Chien Sen Wang's Greatest Luck Residence represents a significant achievement within contemporary residential design, demonstrating how spatial planning, material selection, and luminous orchestration can elevate domestic environments into realms of architectural contemplation. Positioning itself within the lineage of minimalist spatial practice that emerged from mid-twentieth-century modernist principles while incorporating the material restraint characteristic of Scandinavian and East Asian design traditions, this interior composition evidences a sophisticated understanding of how neutral palettes, carefully calibrated proportions, and strategic lighting design collaborate to produce environments of serene functionality and understated elegance. The technical execution reveals notable compositional intelligence in the treatment of spatial recession, where overlapping architectural planes and carefully positioned thresholds create a measured progression from intimate foreground seating zones through formal middle-ground dining areas toward illuminated background passages, each spatial layer contributing to an overall sense of generous openness while maintaining distinct functional territories. The chromatic sophistication lies in the disciplined restraint of the palette, anchored in warm creams, soft greys, and natural wood tones, punctuated by the concentrated chromatic accent of the midnight blue table base that provides just enough visual surprise to activate the composition without disrupting its overall tonal harmony. The lighting design demonstrates particular accomplishment, layering warm accent illumination from concealed architectural sources within shelving and soffits against the cool clarity of filtered natural daylight, producing a luminous environment that suggests both warmth and spaciousness, intimacy and airiness, qualities often held in tension but here reconciled through sensitive calibration. The furniture selection and arrangement evidences careful attention to scale relationships and visual weight distribution, with the substantial curved sectional providing anchoring mass in the foreground while the slender dining chair profiles maintain visual lightness in the middle ground, preventing spatial congestion while ensuring functional adequacy. The material palette speaks to an appreciation for tactile quality and surface refinement, evident in the contrast between soft leather upholstery, smooth lacquered surfaces, and the warm grain of natural timber flooring, each material contributing its particular sensory character to the overall spatial experience. Thematically, this residence appears to explore questions central to contemporary domestic life: how to create environments that support both social gathering and individual retreat, how to balance openness with enclosure, how to achieve visual calm without sacrificing character, and how to honor the quotidian rhythms of daily life through architectural and interior design choices that elevate routine activities into opportunities for aesthetic appreciation. The work invites consideration of how residential interiors function not merely as backdrops for life but as active participants in shaping experience, mood, and the quality of daily existence, suggesting that thoughtful design attention to proportion, light, material, and spatial sequence can transform the experience of home from simple shelter into a continuously renewing source of visual pleasure and psychological restoration. One might contemplate how the careful balance between warm and cool tones, between architectural geometry and organic furniture curves, between illuminated focal points and shadowed recesses, reflects broader aspirations toward lives characterized by equilibrium, intention, and mindful inhabitation of space.

- Production Technology
- The common area on first floor is dominated by classic black and white gray of modern style, with the original marbling floor from the builder. Art paint wall of milk tea color and leather sofa are also selected to make the space consistent. With the habit of loving cooking, the kitchen selects imported kitchen utensils from Germany, with neat and simple glazing black texture, free of handle, built-in electrical cabinets and exquisite storage hardware, which greatly increase the owner's storage demand and the convenience of cooking.
- Design Challenge
- In this case, the basement is long and narrow, dark, and the height is only 220 cm. The designer divides the long and narrow space into a garage and a hostel, and then divides the entertainment space into two parts, with KTV club area and mahjong area, changing the space function and increasing the flexibility of use. Then extend the visual space with mirror ceiling, and transform the oppression caused by the low ceiling, fireplace illuminates and warms the space atmosphere. The originally narrow, dark, and low ceilinged basement has been transformed into a convenient and versatile entertainment space.
- Project Duration
- The project started in September 2023 and finished in January 2024 in Taichung.
- Operation Flow
- In this case, the basement combined with the home style where guests often have parties and the preference for Korean restaurant culture, and the designer also integrated the garage with hostel to facilitate personnel access. In addition, the hostel reflects the attitude of Korean restaurant, combined with electric mahjong table, KTV club, wine refrigerator, smart lighting, etc., to create a diversified entertainment space.
- Research
- In the private area, the designer interprets the historical trajectory of modern style through various elements, colors and lines. The master bedroom uses black, white and gray as the keynote, and three kinds of paint are applied on the walls, namely: imitation water mold paint on the back of the bed, cloud brush paint on the side, and special imitation stone paint on other walls. The layers are delicate, and then the proportion is brought out by lines, and intelligent lighting is implanted to show the neat and function of contemporary modern style.
- Inspiration
- The couple lives together with two children. The owner prefers clean and simple vibe, pays attention to life quality of the family, the learning environment of children, and has warm hospitality and cooking habits. As their relatives and friends often come to visit, the owner hopes that visitors can be treated without interfering with the children's learning environment. The owner's experience in Korea makes him love the unique casual atmosphere of Korean restaurants and pubs.
