About Grampo Lamp
The Grampo Lamp makes use of brazilian wood fibers' natural flexibility, enabling it to bend, clip, or detach the light spot, converting it into a battery-powered flashlight that recharges while clipped in the stand. This design showcases the material's inherent characteristics and a commitment to sustainable sourcing. This project combines traditional woodworking with advanced manufacturing, including 3D printing. Grampo Lamp is inspired by the rich tradition of Brazilian wood design, yet it integrates functionalities that are only available in contemporary times.
Within the broader trajectory of contemporary lighting design, Bruno De Lazzari's Grampo Lamp emerges as a thoughtful meditation on the relationship between functional necessity and sculptural presence, engaging with traditions of Scandinavian restraint while introducing distinctly personal formal vocabulary. The design appears to draw upon the legacy of mid-century modernist lighting, particularly the adjustable task lamp typology pioneered in the postwar period, yet reimagines these conventions through a lens of material warmth and gestural simplicity that feels distinctly contemporary. The lamp's defining characteristic, an articulated head that clasps the vertical stem through a mechanism reminiscent of the common paper clip, demonstrates how prosaic everyday objects might inspire elegant formal solutions when approached with fresh perception. This translation of the humble grampo into architectural scale speaks to a design philosophy valuing conceptual clarity and immediate comprehensibility, the lamp's operating principle becoming apparent through visual inspection alone. The chromatic range presented, spanning from the authoritative gravity of matte black through the organic authenticity of natural walnut to the cultivated freshness of sage green, suggests careful consideration of diverse interior contexts and personal preferences. Each finish maintains the design's essential character while offering distinct atmospheric contributions: the black achieving metropolitan sophistication, the walnut radiating domestic warmth, and the green introducing botanical vitality. The proportional relationships between base, stem, and head demonstrate refined understanding of visual weight distribution, the substantial circular base providing both physical stability and compositional grounding for the ascending linear element. Viewers might consider how the designer has resolved the eternal tension between object and environment, creating a form substantial enough to command presence yet restrained enough to defer graciously to its surroundings.

- Unique Properties
- The Grampo Lamp, made from sustainably managed Brazilian tropical wood, showcases a unique, flexible design. Its column, with a vertical slit, allows for adjustable positioning of the light spot. This innovation, coupled with a wireless energy transmission system using stainless steel blades, offers versatility and doubles as an emergency light. The touch-sensitive control with three intensity levels, smooth lines, and artisanal craftsmanship highlight its functional elegance.

- Production Technology
- All wood is solid, machined, and hand-finished. The top part was made with grooves for the electrical connection, slightly offset to prevent short-circuiting. The wood spot houses all electrical components, fitted inside a 3D printed case, allowing the entire functional part to be removed for maintenance. Connections to the wires from the previous part are made with laser-cut stainless steel 'flaps' that are insulated from each other, sending energy to the battery. The base houses the wiring that is connected to a USB-C port for charging.
- Design Challenge
- The most difficult part of designing and executing the lamp was to harmonize the wood's flexibility with the internal wire connection that allows the lamp to charge when fitted, and also to fit the electronic components inside the removable spot.
- Project Duration
- The project started in April 2023 and finished in December 2024. The design and prototyping were all carried out in my shop in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
- Operation Flow
- The lamp can be adjusted slightly in height and angled to change direction. There is a touch-sensitive button on top of the spot to turn on and dim the light. This spot can be removed, serving as a wireless lantern. The battery is also useful during a blackout, or to allow the whole stand to be moved where there is no nearby energy connection, such as outdoors.
- Research
- The project started from a need to illuminate one of my wall pieces in an exposition; I needed an adjustable light for that. I made 5 pieces for the expo, very simple and minimalist, with wires connected permanently to the spot, and a steel column, but the flexible wood concept was already there at the top. I thought I could expand the idea by making the spot wireless, and felt that the overall aspects of the piece could be sleeker and more elegant, inspired a bit by modern-era Brazilian designers.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the flexibility of sustainably sourced Brazilian tropical wood, the Grampo Lamp marries natural beauty with innovative design. It reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility and a fascination with wood's natural properties. This project combines traditional woodworking with advanced manufacturing, including 3D printing, to create a versatile, aesthetically pleasing lamp that pays homage to national identity while pushing the boundaries of sustainable design.
