About Gathering Residence
Gathering is a residential interior design for a home of 151 square meters in Taiwan. The layout offers three plus one bedrooms, a living room, a dining room and two bathrooms. High ceilings shape the public area, where a geometric ceiling form holds the piping and adds vertical scale. A stacked glass block wall in the foyer transmits light while keeping the entrance private. A custom table three meters long serves family and friends. Glass panels on the partitions protect children. Materials include slab tiles, glass tiles, iron parts and special paint.
C9 design's Gathering Residence emerges from a tradition of open-plan residential design that seeks to dissolve conventional room boundaries in favor of fluid, interconnected living environments where distinct functional zones achieve definition through material differentiation, ceiling articulation, and carefully positioned threshold elements rather than through structural walls. The spatial planning demonstrates sophisticated understanding of contemporary domestic living patterns, accommodating both the social dynamics of shared cooking and dining around an expansive island and the more intimate requirements of relaxation in the adjacent seating area, these dual programs integrated within a single visual field through the unifying horizontal datum of consistent flooring and ceiling planes. The compositional achievement lies in the masterful calibration of horizontal emphasis and vertical punctuation, the extended kitchen work surface and low-profile furnishings establishing a predominantly lateral reading that emphasizes spatial breadth and visual calm, while the staggered pendant fixtures, the vertical gridded partition, and the nested frames of the media wall treatment provide rhythmic vertical accents that prevent monotony and guide the eye through layered depths. Chromatic sophistication appears in the restrained palette where cool grays dominate to create atmospheric serenity, punctuated by warmer taupe upholstery that invites tactile engagement, metallic accents that catch and reflect ambient light, and the golden-bronze mottling on the media surround that functions as jewel-like focal accent enlivening the otherwise subdued tonality without disrupting overall harmony. The textural orchestration proves equally nuanced, juxtaposing the reflective smoothness of polished stone surfaces against the soft pile of upholstery and fur, the matte absorption of painted wall planes against the geometric relief of the tiled partition, creating sensory variety that rewards sustained looking and would provide corresponding haptic richness in lived experience. Lighting strategy employs soft, diffused natural illumination filtered through translucent drapery to create high-key luminosity that minimizes shadow and emphasizes the material qualities of surfaces, this ambient environmental light supplemented by recessed downlights providing functional task illumination and the pendant fixtures offering sculptural presence as much as practical light distribution. The vertical partition composed of small rectangular tiles in stacked grid arrangement serves multiple spatial and experiential functions, providing visual screening that maintains privacy for zones beyond while preserving visual continuity through its semi-transparent or translucent character, its geometric regularity establishing rhythmic visual interest, and its dark finish creating tonal contrast against lighter surrounding surfaces. The media wall composition demonstrates particularly sophisticated formal resolution, the dark charcoal stone surround providing grounding visual weight and material richness, the recessed television niche suggesting technology integrated within architectural fabric rather than applied as afterthought, and the larger surrounding panel with its subtle golden mottling functioning as abstract textured field that elevates the utilitarian screen to contemplative focal element. The design suggests engagement with multiple lineages within contemporary residential architecture: Scandinavian modernism in its emphasis on natural light and material honesty, Japanese spatial traditions in its use of semi-transparent partitioning to articulate thresholds while maintaining openness, and contemporary luxury hospitality design in its layered neutral palette and attention to surface refinement. What questions about domestic space and daily ritual does this carefully composed environment invite us to consider, and how might such thoughtful material and spatial resolution transform the ordinary acts of cooking, gathering, and resting into experiences of aesthetic contemplation and sensory pleasure?

- Unique Properties
- The ceiling is high. To strengthen the sense of spaciousness, the design team built an upright glass block in the foyer to create a light-transmitting but private effect and to present a three-dimensional vision. The storage area next to the dining table has a duplex-like function. The installation of glass panels on the partitions prevents children from falling. The design team demonstrated "gathering" on the ceiling. The public area is planned according to the ceiling height for the living and dining rooms, and the geometric shape can satisfy the piping and achieve a vertical enlargement effect.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The site has a total area of 151 square meters, with 3 plus 1 bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and 2 bathrooms. The space serves two people, and the client's main demand is for gathering. The design team reorganized the original four-bedroom layout to make the living room more comfortable and spacious, and the master bedroom also has a dressing room. At the same time, the master bedroom has a part of the space for storage near the hallway, and the kitchen has been transformed into a duplex layout by removing unnecessary partitions.

- Production Technology
- Building materials: slab tiles, glass tiles, moru glass, iron parts, special paint, titanium-plated trim, woodwork, tiles, etc. Glass tiles in the foyer are a common material used in interior design. However, to build a structurally sound wall, a reinforcement structure must be used in the brick joints. This is a tedious and laborious process that must be completed at once, different from the new type of glass bricks. The project's unique edge-to-edge glass blocks are stacked in layers to create a new visual effect.
- Design Challenge
- The most common building materials in the space are slab tiles, which are large in size and take time and labor to transport. In addition, the layout is significantly changed, including the drainage of the toilet and bathroom, so the site structure had to be considered and Feng-Shui had to be satisfied. In the end, the design team planned the perfect direction and traffic flow to provide a comfortable and spacious home for the family.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in June 2022 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The clients are satisfied with the different atmospheres of the public and private areas. In the public area, the three-meter-long custom-made table can meet the needs of the gathering. Both adults and children can find their place. As for the private area, the layout has been redesigned to provide a comfortable function and bathrooms for relaxation.
- Research
- The name of the project is "Gathering", which is from the demand for the use of space and the experience it presents. AThe design team has created a large banquet room that can accommodate a large number of people according to the client's needs, with a three-meter-long dining table where adults can enjoy a drink and a meal. It is noteworthy that the side storage has a duplex-like design, allowing children to play in the spacious area. Lastly, the transparent glass to increase the communication of sight is a wonderful touch.
- Inspiration
- The site is on the first floor. For the client, the space not only serves as a home, but also as a place for family and friends to gather. The design team emphasized the advantages of high ceilings and created a stress-free space for visitors of all ages. At the same time, they used building materials such as glass tiles and special paints to create a vibrant and textured style.
