About Flatiron Lamp

Achille Castiglioni was convinced that the designer should delete, delete, delete and at the end find the core aspect of the design. Bruno Munari was used to say that to complicate things is easy, while to simplify things is very hard. Flatiron comes from the crasis of this two references. A light source encased by a body made by a simple metal sheet with just one fold. The minimum amount of elements for a product with great prominence, a collection of lamps characterized by a design as essential as effective.

Within the tradition of sculptural lighting design that transforms functional objects into artistic statements, MrSmith Studio's Flatiron Lamp emerges as a meditation on geometry, materiality, and the poetics of illumination, drawing upon a rich heritage that spans from the revolutionary lighting designs of early modernism through contemporary explorations of form and light. The work demonstrates exceptional sophistication in its resolution of apparently competing demands: the lamp functions simultaneously as a source of warm, inviting illumination and as a sculptural presence that commands attention even when unlit, its triangular profile evoking both the historic architectural landmark that inspired its name and the timeless geometric forms that have captivated designers across cultures and centuries. The technical achievement evidenced in the precise folding and joining of the copper panels reveals mastery of metalworking traditions, with each edge meeting its neighbor with the exactitude that transforms industrial material into precious object. The choice of copper as primary material proves particularly inspired, as this metal's unique capacity to warm in tone under its own light creates a self-reinforcing chromatic harmony where the amber glow intensifies the rosy character of the surrounding surfaces. The concealment of the light source within the form's interior represents a thoughtful engagement with the phenomenology of light, inviting observers to experience illumination as emanation rather than projection, as atmospheric presence rather than directional beam. The work's placement within a carefully composed domestic tableau suggests its intended context as both functional instrument and aesthetic anchor, capable of transforming quotidian workspace into sanctuary for focused attention and creative contemplation. Viewers might consider how the lamp's wedge form creates dialogue between architectural scale and intimate domestic object, between industrial precision and handcrafted warmth, between concealment and revelation.

Production Technology
Lasercut metal sheet with a single fold for the structure. Dimmerable LED strip as a light source.
Design Challenge
Bruno Munari once said that to complicate things is easy, while to simplify things is very hard. Achille Castiglioni was convinced that the designer should delete, delete, delete and at the end find the core aspect of the design. Flatiron comes from the combination of this two references. A simple metal sheet with just one fold that encases the light source. The challenge has been to reduce the project to the minimum amount of elements.
Project Duration
Development of the project took 4 months and took place in Milan
Operation Flow
Simply plug the lamp, press the dimmer and you can turn on or off the lamp and dimm the intensity of light
Research
Starting from a deep research on floor lamps, we focused then on understanding which could be the right kind of light source. Because the aim of this product is not to be a technical lamp, but to be an decorative ambient lamp, the diffused light is the right choice and the shape of the structure itself orientates the beam. We invested a lot of time in the selection of the right light source because we wanted it to be warm and dimmerable.
Inspiration
The combination of the world of origami and the world of architecture is what is at the base of Flatiron family.
The name itself has two meaning. First is a reference to the famous building in Manhattan with a triangular shape. Than explains how it is made, starting from a simple flat sheet of iron.
