About Fine Interlock Chandelier

Due to technical and machine limitations, the shape of traditional wooden tenons can’t change too much. By combining soft tenon steps with CNC processing methods, the impression of the conventional tenon joint is subverted, and tenon craft has more possibilities in shape and application, genuinely making it come alive. Inspired by experimental modeling, the shape of the dovetail joint and the twisting effect of the work are similar to the helical structure of DNA and thus tried to develop in this direction.

Che-Chia Hsu's Fine Interlock Chandelier represents a compelling contribution to contemporary lighting design where functional illumination merges seamlessly with sculptural ambition, positioning the work within ongoing international discourse surrounding the integration of industrial materials, systematic geometric organization, and architectural thinking into residential and commercial luminaire development. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how repetitive modular elements can generate complex visual effects through accumulation, with the precisely aligned cylindrical metal tubes creating both structural integrity and aesthetic interest through their serial arrangement, a compositional strategy resonant with minimalist sculptural traditions that emerged in the mid-twentieth century and continue to inform contemporary design practice across multiple disciplines. The technical execution reveals accomplished control over material specification and fabrication processes, with each metallic tube exhibiting consistent dimensional properties, smooth polished finish, and exact parallel alignment that collectively produce the graceful horizontal arc, while the integration of warm light sources between elements achieves dual functions of ambient illumination and material activation, causing the cool metallic surfaces to glow from within rather than remaining inert reflective barriers. The chromatic sophistication emerges through the dialogue between cool neutrals of the polished metal ranging from bright silver to deep charcoal and the warm coral-amber luminosity emanating from the integrated lighting, establishing temperature contrast that prevents the potentially austere industrial materials from feeling cold or unwelcoming while maintaining the design's essential contemporary character. Compositionally, the work demonstrates understanding of proportion, balance, and visual rhythm, with the elongated horizontal format creating architectural presence suitable for installation above dining tables, kitchen islands, or other linear spatial configurations, while the shallow catenary curve softens the strict linearity with organic grace suggesting natural suspension physics rather than rigid geometric imposition. The chandelier appears to explore themes of transparency and opacity, lightness and mass, industrial precision and organic flow, inviting viewers to consider how systematic repetition of simple elements can generate unexpected visual complexity and how carefully calibrated material choices and light integration transform utilitarian objects into aesthetic experiences that enrich daily environments and elevate routine activities through thoughtful design intervention that respects both functional requirements and experiential aspirations.

Unique Properties
Due to technical and machine limitations, the shape of traditional wooden tenons can’t change too much. By combining soft tenon steps with CNC processing methods, the impression of the conventional tenon joint is subverted, and tenon craft has more possibilities in shape and application, genuinely making it come alive.

Production Technology
CNC processing is used to create more complex teno shapes.Aluminum was chosen as the primary material, and a mirror effect was achieved through polished chrome plating. Choosing the method of SLA printing, transparent soft resin can quickly produce transparent objects with complex shapes and grind the surface into a matte surface to improve its light-guiding effect.
Design Challenge
There are two biggest challenges during the development. The first challenge is that I have difficulties thinking outside the box and coming up with a unique design, so I seek ideas through numerous experiments. The second challenge is that the actual material is very heavy, so I must redesign the entire structure of my product
Project Duration
The project started in August 2024 in Taiwan and finished in january 2025 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
You can see the light only come through the tenon joint which indicates the detail of the design and the main theme of the entire concept.
Research
In the beginning, I collected and studied numerous pieces of knowledge and ideas about the traditional technique of Chinese tenon joints through books. The next step to know better about the tenon joint was to learn how to perform this technique from a woodcraft master. After this, I used a 3D printer to test and verify my design and idea. In the final step, I consulted an ironworker’s ideas to apply the actual material to my design and make it work.
Inspiration
I am fascinated by the calculation and processing precision required for this traditional craft of woodworking joints, and the final product that is presented. Inspired by experimental modeling, I discovered that the shape of the dovetail joint and the twisting effect of the work are similar to the helical structure of DNA and thus tried to develop in this direction.
