About Feathers of Love and Peace Residence
Feathers of Love and Peace is the interior design of the communal spaces of a residential building in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The design refers to the work of Pablo Picasso and to the themes of love and peace. The main staircase in the lobby uses geometric forms shaped by hollowing, cutting, stacking and reorganizing to suggest a dove with open wings. A reception area, a lounge and a children playroom follow. The gym has floor to ceiling windows facing green landscapes. Renewable wood panels, natural stone and low carbon cement are used.
Jy Architecture's Feathers of Love and Peace Residence positions itself within the contemporary trajectory of biomorphic spatial design, where architectural form draws inspiration from natural geological processes and organic growth patterns, creating environments that balance sculptural drama with serene inhabitation. The residence demonstrates sophisticated formal command through its signature undulating horizontal stratification, where limestone or terrazzo surfaces flow across multiple levels in wavelike profiles that evoke sedimentary geological formations shaped by millennia of natural erosion, the continuity of material wrapping vertically through staircase and horizontally through reception zones establishing visual coherence while organic apertures carved through these flowing planes create dynamic spatial layering and framed glimpses that reward exploratory viewing. The chromatic achievement lies in the disciplined restraint exercising a warm neutral palette where honey-toned beige stone establishes atmospheric warmth without chromatic saturation, walnut veneer introduces organic richness, and discrete touches of white, black, and coral provide just enough contrast to articulate functional zones and sculptural elements without disrupting the enveloping calm. Technical facility appears in the seamless integration of complex curved geometries, the precise detailing where materials meet, and the sophisticated lighting design that illuminates without drama, allowing the architecture itself to provide visual interest through form and material rather than theatrical illumination. The sculptural chandelier composed of vertical black rods terminating in frosted spherical globes demonstrates particular compositional intelligence, creating vertical counterpoint to the dominant horizontal flow while its cascading rhythm echoes the layered spatial zones below, the piece functioning simultaneously as functional lighting, sculptural accent, and scale mediator between human and architectural dimensions. Thematically, the residence appears to explore the translation of natural processes into permanent architectural form, suggesting that domestic space can embrace organic irregularity and flowing continuity while maintaining functional clarity and material refinement, the undulating profiles inviting contemplation of how natural forces shape landscape over time, perhaps proposing that residential architecture might similarly evolve through gentle accumulation rather than rigid imposition. The transparent glass balustrade reveals sophisticated understanding of visual weight and material dematerialization, allowing the sculptural staircase to appear to float within the space while maintaining requisite safety, the transparency creating layered views that multiply spatial complexity without physical obstruction. One might observe how the organic apertures carved through the flowing planes function as framing devices that transform distant spaces into composed vignettes, inviting consideration of how architectural form can choreograph viewing sequences and create intimacy within generous volume, the residence ultimately proposing that contemporary domestic space can achieve both sculptural boldness and serene livability when formal drama emerges from material continuity and organic geometry rather than contrasting elements or chromatic intensity.
