About Expandy Office

This is the office of a company that exports products from all over Japan overseas. It is located on the second floor of the company's vast logistics warehouse. The Spanish owner and a Japanese designer had many discussions to decide on the interior design. The design theme is a rough, dynamic, and inorganic monotone interior like an old warehouse in Europe or the United States. However, if everything is monotone, it becomes too inorganic and is not the best design for an office space to work in, so ingenuity has been put into each part to create a design suitable for an office space.

SHUNSUKE OHE's Expandy Office demonstrates the evolving vocabulary of contemporary workplace design, positioning itself within current discourse surrounding human-centered spatial environments that seek to reconcile productivity imperatives with occupant wellbeing through thoughtful material selection and calculated biophilic intervention. The project engages with minimalist design traditions while avoiding austerity through strategic deployment of natural elements, establishing a visual and experiential framework where industrial materiality and organic vitality coexist in productive tension rather than opposition, suggesting an understanding of workspace as more than mere functional container but rather as environment capable of supporting both focused work and psychological restoration. The compositional achievement lies in the rigorous axial organization that provides clear spatial legibility and intuitive navigation while avoiding monotony through careful variation in ceiling treatment, lighting rhythm, and the asymmetric placement of wood and planting elements that activate the left edge of the composition and create dynamic balance rather than static symmetry, the designer demonstrating facility with orthogonal geometric systems while introducing sufficient variation to maintain visual interest across the extended spatial sequence. Material selection reveals sophisticated restraint and integration, the cool mineral palette of concrete providing neutral ground that amplifies the warmth of timber elements and the chromatic intensity of living plants, the limited material vocabulary creating coherence while textural contrasts between smooth wood, granular stone, and complex organic foliage prevent visual monotony and provide haptic interest for occupants moving through the space, the concrete itself handled with attention to its inherent character rather than concealed beneath applied finishes, suggesting respect for material authenticity consistent with contemporary sustainable design values. The lighting design deserves particular recognition for its layered complexity, combining ambient illumination that ensures functional visibility with focused pendant fixtures that create moments of visual punctuation and warmth, the warm color temperature of the task lighting providing psychological comfort within the otherwise cool gray environment, and the careful positioning of fixtures creating rhythm and visual guidance along the circulation path, while background lighting effects on the distant chromatic ribbon installation add unexpected visual interest and suggest spatial depth extending beyond the immediate frame, this multivalent lighting approach demonstrating understanding of illumination as environmental tool rather than mere functional necessity, serving aesthetic, wayfinding, and psychological functions simultaneously. The integration of substantial plant masses represents more than decorative gesture, engaging with established research documenting psychological benefits of natural elements within built environments, the generous scale of planting suggesting commitment to biophilic principles rather than tokenistic greenwashing, the tropical species selection with their broad architectural leaves providing bold visual forms that hold their own against the strong geometries of the built architecture, and the placement of planters defining spatial zones and guiding movement while maintaining visual permeability and avoiding segmentation of the overall volume, this strategic deployment of living elements potentially improving air quality, acoustic performance, and occupant satisfaction while providing dynamic seasonal variation as the plants grow and respond to conditions. Thematically, the project invites consideration of how contemporary work environments might balance seemingly competing values of efficiency and humanity, order and vitality, technological sophistication and natural connection, suggesting through its formal language that these need not constitute binary oppositions but rather can achieve synthesis when approached with design intelligence and material sensitivity, the restrained palette and geometric discipline providing the stable framework within which organic irregularity and chromatic vitality can register as meaningful contrast rather than visual chaos, the overall composition proposing a model of workplace design that acknowledges human needs for both structure and flexibility, focus and respite, rational order and sensory richness. One might observe how light, material, and living elements collaborate here to create an environment that supports diverse working modes and psychological states, potentially enabling occupants to experience both productive concentration and restorative pause within a single coherent spatial framework, inviting consideration of how future workplaces might continue evolving beyond purely functional optimization toward more holistic support of human flourishing.

Unique Properties
The theme of the interior design, a rough, dynamic, inorganic monotone space like an old warehouse in Europe or America, can be too inorganic and may not be the best design for an office space.
So, by installing a louvered ceiling finished in the client's three logo colors and placing colorful potted plants, accents are added to the inorganic space, making it a design suitable for an office space.

Design Challenge
The client's previous office space was outdated and lacking in design, but the renewed space has motivated the staff and improved the impression of the client's clients, which has contributed to the development of their business.
Project Duration
Project Duration : From February 2024 to May 2024
Project location : Hyogo(Japan)
Operation Flow
The space was laid out while carefully simulating the expected movement lines of staff and visitors.
It is not a large space, but it is an efficient layout with no waste. The president's office is located at the very back of the space, and the glass partition gives the space a sense of spaciousness and allows the president and staff to communicate effectively.
Research
The building itself is old, and its strength and insulation are difficult to maintain, so appropriate measures were taken to prevent them from interfering with the design.
