About Ethereal Essence Plastic Surgery Clinic
Ethereal Essence is the interior design of a plastic surgery clinic in Taipei, Taiwan. The 260 square meter space draws on Chinese and Japanese Zen influences, using natural materials and earth tones to create a calm atmosphere. High-back screens made of five wood pieces are fixed with hardware clips and can be removed to open the whole space for public events and lectures. Two semi-open rooms use panel curtains instead of solid partitions, so light passes through while privacy is kept. Ink-grained stone slabs meet wood veneer to control cost.
Meng Chen Ho's design for a medical clinic interior demonstrates how contemporary spatial practice can transform healthcare environments from purely functional settings into contemplative sanctuaries that honor both clinical purpose and human psychological need for beauty and tranquility. Working within the established conventions of luxury wellness design, the project engages minimalist spatial philosophy while maintaining the warmth and approachability essential to healthcare contexts where clients may experience vulnerability. The compositional achievement centers on the sophisticated orchestration of horizontal stratification, where floor, desk, wall planes, and ceiling create clearly articulated layers that provide visual stability and psychological grounding, a formal strategy that evokes both the rational order of modernist architecture and the serene horizontality of traditional contemplative spaces across various cultural traditions. The material palette reveals particular accomplishment in its restraint and precision, most notably in the selection of grey-veined marble for the reception desk, a choice that balances the authority and permanence of natural stone with the gentle visual movement of its organic patterning, creating a focal point that commands attention through quality rather than scale or ornament. The freestanding screen element at foreground left demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial layering and visual permeability, its fine metallic mesh creating a diaphanous veil that suggests division without isolation, filters view without obstruction, and introduces textural delicacy that counterpoints the solidity of stone and the crispness of architectural planes, a contemporary interpretation of screen traditions that have long served to create spatial intervals and contemplative thresholds. Chromatic sophistication emerges through the compressed neutral palette spanning cool and warm greys, soft whites, and bronze accents, with the singular appearance of muted coral or rose tonality in the background providing carefully measured chromatic relief, this restrained color strategy allowing material texture and spatial proportion to achieve primacy while avoiding the sterile coldness sometimes associated with excessive neutrality. The lighting design integrates multiple systems including recessed ambient sources, linear architectural elements, and focused accents to create layered illumination that models space gently while maintaining overall luminosity, achieving the delicate balance between clinical brightness necessary for functional clarity and atmospheric softness conducive to psychological ease. Thematically, the design seems to explore the proposition that healthcare environments can simultaneously communicate clinical competence and human empathy, professional authority and approachable warmth, hygienic precision and aesthetic nourishment, suggesting that the spaces where individuals seek transformation and care deserve the same considered design attention traditionally reserved for cultural or commercial luxury contexts. The work invites consideration of how material choice, spatial proportion, and lighting quality collaborate to create psychological atmosphere, and how designed environments might serve not merely as backdrops for human activity but as active participants in experiences of care, transformation, and renewal. One might observe how the space balances transparency and privacy, openness and enclosure, clarity and mystery, creating intervals for pause and reflection within a program typically dominated by efficiency and function, and consider how such spatial generosity might influence the emotional experience of those who move through these carefully calibrated thresholds.

- Production Technology
- Splicing expensive ink-grained stone slabs with cheap wood veneers not only saves budget but also improves the craftsmanship.
The semi-open box uses panel curtains. Different from the general fixed partition sliding doors or heavy S-shaped curtains, the panel curtains can be easily opened and closed. While protecting privacy, they can also allow light to pass through, providing a sense of transparency, making people feel safe in the box without feeling depressed. - Design Challenge
- The timeline and budget for design and construction were tight.
The 260 square meter project had to be designed and constructed within 6 months and included specialist items such as operating theatres and gas engineering.
The designer had never worked on a medical space related to plastic surgery before, so he had to understand the project and study the space requirements at the front end, combining aesthetics, functionality and professional space use, all under the pressure of time and budget. - Project Duration
- The project began design and construction in Taipei, Taiwan in April 2024. Under tight budget and time constraints, it took 6 months to complete and was delivered to the customer in September 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The high-back screen is made of 5 pieces of wood, fixed with hardware clips and can be disassembled individually.
When the client wants to clear the entire space for public events and lectures, the screens can be completely removed and the space can be fully opened.
It maintains a sense of openness while cleverly creating a moderate sense of privacy, making it suitable for communication or resting alone.
The two semi-open rooms use panel curtains as space partitions. Clients and consultants can enter and exit from any direction, which increases flexibility and efficiency. - Research
- Plastic Surgery Clinic
Within 6 months, design and construction were carried out simultaneously to create a commercial environment that is both functional and artistic.
Integrating medical engineering expertise, fast, lightweight, fireproof, and durable construction and assembly methods,
Use soft furnishings to create uniqueness and beauty. - Inspiration
- We use natural materials, earth colors and textures to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. We incorporate Chinese and Japanese Zen artistic conception, integrating the concepts of high-end clubs, professional clinics and meditation treatment rooms.
When designing within budget constraints, I consider how to present:
Unique without being exaggerated,
Beautiful but not luxurious,
Low cost but not cheap.
Timeless classic style.
