About Espada Selvagem Visual Identity
Espada Selvagem is a visual identity for a medieval fencing club in Brazil. The design is inspired by the beasts of ancient heraldry, reinterpreted in a modern way. A jaguar was chosen because the animal is native to Brazil and suggests speed, energy and competitiveness. The spots of the jaguar are formed by circles that also create a sense of movement. The drawing follows the proportion of the golden ratio. The symbol is built in vector format, so the identity can be applied to uniforms, patches, books, medals, flags and social media in many sizes.
Pedro Panetto's Espada Selvagem Visual Identity participates in a rich continuum of heraldic visual language that extends from medieval tournament culture through contemporary brand identity practice, demonstrating how historical symbolic vocabularies retain communicative power when reinterpreted through modern graphic design sensibility and technical precision. The work's formal achievement rests in its disciplined chromatic economy—restricting the palette to warm ochre-gold and deep charcoal-black generates maximum contrast and immediate visual legibility while evoking both historical precedent in medieval illumination and banner-making traditions, and contemporary sophistication in minimalist brand systems that rely on iconic simplification rather than chromatic complexity for market distinction. The compositional architecture employs classical bilateral symmetry along a strong central vertical axis, a decision that reinforces the heraldic heritage while providing stable, confident visual equilibrium appropriate to identity systems requiring authoritative presence and institutional gravitas; the pentagonal shield form with its tapering lower terminus and crenellated upper edge directly references gonfalon and tournament pennant traditions, positioning the identity within lineages of martial valor, protected territory, and collective allegiance. The central rampant feline figure—whether interpreted as jaguar, leopard, or generalized wild cat—represents a masterful exercise in graphic distillation, reducing complex organic anatomy to essential gestural contours and strategic spotted patterning achieved through negative circular voids that simultaneously suggest pelage, create visual rhythm, and maintain the flat graphic integrity essential to reproducible identity systems across diverse media and scales. The creature's dynamic pose, with elongated S-curve tail, extended claws, three-quarter turned head with open jaws, and powerful haunches suggesting upward spring, captures arrested kinetic energy and predatory readiness, encoding symbolic associations with strength, courage, wildness, territorial dominance, and noble ferocity—qualities historically prized in heraldic devices and readily translatable to contemporary brand narratives around athletic performance, adventure pursuits, craft excellence, or competitive distinction. The vertical longsword positioned along the left third introduces geometric counterpoint to the organic feline form, its cruciform hilt and straight blade providing symbolic reinforcement through martial associations while creating strong vertical vector that guides the eye and reinforces the composition's upward thrust and aspirational character. The circular arc text following the shield's right contour demonstrates sophisticated typographic integration, subordinating informational content to primary symbolic hierarchy while maintaining legibility and completing the compositional enclosure. One might observe how this identity system achieves timeless quality through its synthesis of historical depth and contemporary execution—the heraldic vocabulary provides narrative richness and cultural resonance, while the flat graphic treatment, hard-edged precision, and chromatic restriction ensure the design functions effectively within modern brand ecosystems requiring versatility, scalability, and instant recognition, inviting viewers to consider how visual identity can honor heritage while serving present commercial and communicative imperatives with authority and memorable distinction.

- Unique Properties
- Inspired by the beasts of ancient Heraldry with a modern reinterpretation, the chosen animal was a jaguar because we are talking about a Brazilian brand. In addition to the regional context, the jaguar represents speed, energy, and competitiveness.
It is filled with balls that represent its spots, but in addition to that, the way it is filled also conveys a sense of movement. - Dimensions & Packaging
- The jaguar design follows the mathematical rule of the golden ratio: 1.618...
The entire project is in vector format, so it can be adapted to any size and proportion. - Tags
- Visual Identity, Logo, Symbol, Heraldic, Movement, jaguar, animal, fencing, sword,
- Production Technology
- The Visual Identity was created using a design methodology that aims to structure the project in 3 pillars: practical, aesthetic and symbolic function.
The goal was to create a brand that is visually interesting, with senses that could connect with the universe of this type of fencing. And at the same time, a brand that was applicable in different contexts, without being minimalist, though. - Design Challenge
- The main challenge that we had to overcome was to create a Visual Identity that was not minimalist, but that worked well in different applications and in smaller sizes.
The solution was to develop a symbol that could be transformed, creating a varied visual identity system that could be used in any size without losing its recognition. - Project Duration
- This project started years ago in 2019, but then we had to pause it and it was only completed in 2024 in Vitória, a city in Brazil.
- Operation Flow
- The logo is used by users in the contexts of application on uniforms, patches, textbooks, medals, social networks and other things such as flags.
In each context it can be used in a different way. - Research
- Movement, speed, tactical ability, sharpness and focus were the abstract concepts of the project briefing.
The jaguar was chosen as a symbol that perfectly conveys these elements.
It has also connected with the historical European heritage of heraldry, combined with the animal that is original from Brazil (the club's location). - Inspiration
- Visual identity for a medieval fencing club.
The logo and symbol are very flexible in terms of use. You can use the same symbol in different formats and contexts without losing characteristics of recognition.
It is a brand that represents a sport that calls for tradition, a brand that connects the current and modern sport with a legacy from the Middle Ages.
