About Esk Space Office
Esk Space is an office interior designed to receive visitors, located in the Binjiang District of Hangzhou, China. The total area of 420 square meters is divided into three zones, with the visitor area as the core. The reception area includes a front hall, a leisure water bar, a seating area and an indoor landscape. Floor-to-ceiling glass at the entrance opens the view over the city, and a sunken reception area is placed in the center. Mirror, glass, stainless steel, stone and wood define the surfaces. Lighting differs between day and night.
Esk Space Office by Leo Chen emerges from contemporary traditions of elevated workplace design that seek to transcend conventional office typologies through the integration of residential comfort, hospitality warmth, and architectural ambition within professional environments. The work demonstrates exceptional command of spatial proportion, deploying the double-height volume to create an atmosphere of ceremonial significance while maintaining intimate gathering zones through carefully scaled furniture arrangements and the psychological anchoring provided by the substantial custom lighting installation. The designer's chromatic strategy reveals sophisticated understanding of how warm material tones—the honeyed walnut of the dining table, the burgundy patina of the pendant fixture's tubular elements—can counterbalance the potential austerity of the expansive glazed envelope and reflective flooring surfaces. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of architectural systems: the ceiling plane reads as a continuous dark field that dramatizes the pendant while concealing mechanical infrastructure, while the floor surface achieves mirror-like reflectivity that visually doubles the spatial volume and captures transient light phenomena throughout the day. The panoramic urban vista functions simultaneously as borrowed landscape and living artwork, its presence orchestrated through the curved glazing geometry that wraps the corner condition and maximizes the experiential connection between interior sanctuary and metropolitan context. Material selections evidence a curatorial sensibility, with each surface—the smooth stone flooring, the textured upholstery, the warm wood grain, the industrial metal finish—contributing to a carefully calibrated tactile narrative. The work invites contemplation of how contemporary workplace design might foster both productivity and well-being, creating spaces where professional endeavor occurs within settings of beauty, comfort, and visual nourishment that honor human presence.

- Unique Properties
- Space according to the function is divided into three areas: to meet the visitors area as the core, the design of the soft and hard to separate the design. The reception area includes the front hall, the leisure water bar area, the reception area and the indoor scenic area. Through appropriate waste area, create the mystery of entering different spaces, make the space transition natural, stimulate exploration and curiosity.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This project has a total area of 420 square meters.

- Production Technology
- The use of large mirror ceiling between the virtual and solid space; architecture; indoor and outdoor interweaving relationship, the use of large areas of stone and local luxury stones, logs, stainless steel and other materials to reflect the texture of the space.
- Design Challenge
- Space design, dividing functional areas is a major challenge. The key to solve this problem is the interpenetration, dislocation, layering and mirroring of building blocks. These techniques can not only divide space, but also create a sense of hierarchy and three-dimensional. Interspersed design makes the space more flexible, provides more functional area possibilities, and enhances spatial mobility and coherence.
- Project Duration
- Start 2023 february-completion 2023 June Hangzhou, Binjiang District, China.
- Operation Flow
- The first step, research, understand the design, function, style needs:
1. Plane planning.
2. Collect intention, develop style, soft installation positioning.
3. Draw preliminary scheme.
4. Draw the 3D model after the plane is confirmed.
5. After confirming the 3D model and material, draw the effect diagram.
The third part presents the spatial effect:
1. Draw the initial 3D effect according to the spatial model.
2. After confirming the initial 3D effect, draw the HD renderings. - Research
- Different lighting techniques are configured between day and night. During the day, it is decorated with natural lights and local point sources in the room, and at night, it is presented with the light source in the middle and low section of the indoor light source as the main indoor atmosphere light city night scene as the painting frame.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by Inception, the designer uses mirror, glass, stainless steel, marble wood finish and other materials, and creates different atmosphere Spaces from private to public through deconstruction and interpenetration.
The entrance is transparent floor-to-ceiling glass, wide field of view overlooking the scenery of Hangzhou. The designer creates a sunken reception area in the central area that connects with the elevation of the entrance. - Image Credits
