About Enno Cheng Daughters Concert
Daughters is a concert stage design centred on the theme of communication. The main stage carries four layers of square LED screens, each 6 by 6 metres and divided into eight panels of 3 by 6 metres. The screens open, close, stretch and overlap, and they move vertically and horizontally to suit each segment. Traditional LED panels were selected instead of transparent ones for clearer light and shadow effects. Text, body language, sound and symbols are combined on stage to show how messages can pass beyond language barriers. The concert was held in Taipei in August 2022.
The Enno Cheng Daughters Concert stage design by B'IN LIVE CO., LTD. exemplifies contemporary performance scenography at its most ambitious, synthesizing digital projection technology, sophisticated lighting design, and spatial composition into a unified theatrical vision that transforms the concert experience into something approaching ritual or cosmic journey. Drawing upon traditions of total theater and immersive environments pioneered throughout the twentieth century, this production extends those aspirations through contemporary technological means, creating an enveloping visual atmosphere that positions the performer as mediator between audience and infinite space. The three luminous spheres function as the compositional and symbolic heart of the design, their planetary or cellular associations inviting multiple readings while maintaining sufficient abstraction to resist singular interpretation. Technical accomplishment manifests throughout the production's handling of light as sculptural material, the converging beams creating geometric volumes that occupy space rather than merely illuminating it, while the atmospheric haze transforms the entire stage into a three-dimensional canvas upon which light and shadow compose constantly shifting relationships. The chromatic restraint demonstrates sophisticated understanding of theatrical color theory, the violet-to-magenta palette establishing emotional register while allowing the white luminosity of the spheres to command focal attention through value contrast rather than chromatic competition. The deliberate scale relationship between the solitary human figure and the monumental projections speaks to enduring artistic preoccupations with individual experience within cosmic context, a theme that resonates across spiritual and philosophical traditions without requiring specific doctrinal framework. One might consider how this staging invites audiences to contemplate their own position within vastness, using the performer as surrogate for collective wonder.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- Communication evolves through various methods and media, making it increasingly diverse. The program showcases different communication modes via music and stage design, ensuring messages are conveyed effectively.
By blending music, visuals, body language, and text, the concert captures each song's essence and instills deeper meanings like human compassion, encouraging reflection and letting profound messages resonate long after. - Dimensions & Packaging
- To enhance stage dynamics, the screens open, close, stretch, and overlap based on the segment, sometimes forming a complete square for added visual depth. Traditional LED screens are used instead of transparent ones to achieve clearer light and shadow effects through better lighting integration.
The main stage features four 6m x 6m screens divided into eight 3m x 6m rectangles. These screens can move vertically to adapt to different segments and music styles, maximizing their visual impact. - Tags

- Production Technology
- Effective communication occurs when the sender can express and the receiver can understand. The music arrangement encourages audience interaction, including clapping and movement. Additionally, dancers use sign language and Taiwanese Hokkien to highlight diverse forms of self-expression and understanding. This approach enriches the concert by showcasing how various mediums enhance experiences and convey messages uniquely.
- Design Challenge
- One major technical challenge is the ceiling load issue. The four layers of LED screens, consisting of eight rectangular panels, need to open horizontally and move vertically.
Balancing screen movement and ceiling load becomes a key concern, making pre-show inspections crucial. Additionally, discussions with the lighting designer lead to choosing Fine Art 156 lights. This choice, due to its unlimited rotation capability, maximizes LED screen configuration while meeting safety load limits. - Project Duration
- The concert was held in August 2022 in Taipei.
- Operation Flow
- Communication evolves with technology and time, from an infant's cry and facial expressions to sign language, Morse code, and more.
The "Daughters" concert's stage design and program aim to not only soothe with music but also prompt a re-evaluation of communication's significance. Beyond conveying messages, diverse forms of communication can transcend borders and language barriers, fostering unexpected love and strength for individuals and society. - Research
- The concert features four main elements: body language, text, sound, and symbols. Rather than following a traditional sequence, these elements are combined in various ways to create new possibilities. Using four layers of square LED screens that move individually, both horizontally and vertically, creating diverse visual forms. This symbolizes neutral communication elements, where different combinations turn simple messages into unexpected reactions, highlighting endless interaction potential.
- Inspiration
- The Daughters concert, inspired by Wu Ming-Yi's chapter "How the Brain Got Language" from "The Land of Little Rain", complements Enno Cheng's album on communication.
The stage features four square LED screens that move independently, symbolizing communication beyond language barriers. Combining words, gestures, and sounds, it creates dynamic visuals and a chemistry of shared messages, offering a profound and thought-provoking experience focused on human compassion.
