About El_Masnad Lounge Carpet
El_Masnad is a floor seating carpet designed for living rooms. The design takes the armrest, a traditional focal point in Saudi homes, and uses it as the main element of the seating unit, while all other parts of a common seat are removed. El_Masnad keeps users close to the ground, so sitting feels playful and intuitive. The pieces have no fixed orientation and can be combined in many configurations. The foam core is shaped by five-axis hot wire milling and wrapped in stitched felt, like a rolled carpet.

- Unique Properties
- Armrests, traditionally, initiates nodes where the space is highly activated in Saudi Arabia. El_Masnad uses armrest as the main component for seating unit and neglect all other parts of a seating device. El_Masnad brings the users close to the ground, so it is much more playful and intuitive for this demographic. It allows the Sitting behaviors to emerge organically and intuitively in many different configurations.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- For one set, a pair of two pieces: w 335cm X d 180cm X h 30cm

- Production Technology
- Manufacturing includes:
5-axis hot wire milling for filling foam.
CNC stitching on felt for generated pattern design.
The upholstery roll up around the foam like the traditional way of rolling a carpet. Felt was used as contemporary alternative material for traditional wool carpets.
El_Masnad is not made of any hard material that may create an obstacle in the space. It rather made with soft materials where circulation can take place. - Design Challenge
- One of the most difficult challenges was finding Saudi women willing to participate in taking pictures. The Second challenge was to see the demographic dramatic lifestyle changes as an outsider, which is critical to synthesize the research findings for the design outcome. Lastly, was Understanding the relationship between the designers, makers and consumers.
- Project Duration
- el-Masnad was made for a thesis study at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, U.S.A. It was part of the Master program in Environmental design, in Furniture and Fixtures track.
Thesis started with winter term of 2014 and ended by the end of the Spring 2015. The first prototype was presented at the graduate show on April 18th of 2014. - Operation Flow
- The orientation:
The development of new technologies, like tablets, eliminates the need for seating units in the living room to face t.v. wall. Therefore, the layout of El_Masnad coming together, is not oriented and does not have a direction. It integrates multiple users doing different activities.
The height:
El_Masnad is close to the ground, so it is playful and intuitive for this demographic. It makes the space feels higher.
The posture:
Sitting behaviors emerges organically and intuitively in all different situations. In addition, the users intuitively adapt new sitting position as time goes by.
The angle:
El_Masnad emphasizes the front angle for reclining instead of what is typical of using the side angle to address the variable reclining angles. - Research
- Perception of Saudis: The appropriate perception of personal space in the Arab world is when there is a strong eye and physical contact while conducting conversation, therefore, the pieces fit together, interlocking making contact easy and intuitive. Arab appreciate complex geometrical forms, and a boxy forms may look naïve, Therefore, the traditional armrest outline was converted into an irregular polygon. Arab view forms with considering the harmonious interplay of forms, so the perception of balance is achieved when two of non-linear El-Masnad are put together.
- Inspiration
- We, Saudi’s end up sitting on the ground every time though there is a typical seating device in the living room. This sparked my curiosity, and inspired to create a the living room that is intuitive for us.
El Masnad design embraces the floor as a living space and it celebrates the Middle Eastern leisure culture.

Design Interview about El_Masnad Lounge Carpet
What amused me to do this project is the observance of people rebel against furniture. I believes by bringing the furniture closer to the ground and emphasizing the armrest, we will achieve one of the most intuitive seating units that is inspired by the Middle Eastern leisure culture.
The main focus was to achieve a design that is easily manufactured by women. The weight of it, the size, the structure and the materials are all picked specifically to be handled by women during the making of it to to the shipment.
Tow terms, which is about 6-8 months
El-Masnad is a cultural expression where I want to make a social impact on people's contemporary lifestyle by meeting a local aspiration through design and making.
All of these are an option. Whatever is faster will be my choice.
I believe that the furniture that we own have a great impact on our lifestyle. and I wanted to make a statement about the contemporary lifestyle of Arab Gulf region of this time.
First, Peter Opsvic wrote a book that was a great inspiration for me. The book and his designs attempts to overcome our stereotypical sitting habits and show how the norms of sitting nicely and still can be broken. Second, The lava sofa for Cor furniture designed by Studio Vertijet received the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany in Silver, in 2009. Also, won red dot award in 2007. They were able to make something playful that appropriate the lively families. Third, the Body Props. By Olivier Peyricot, IDSland. Manufacturer: Edra S.p.A., Italy. This project was developed to introduce new philosophy of comfort where it embraces the floor as a living space.
The Arab Gulf Countries.
El_Masnad is an Arabic word that means everything you lean on. It used traditionally to describe armrests.
I Created ideations through sketches and physical mock-ups in 1⁄4 scale for structural elements and fabric design by using laser cutter. I Prepared production drawings for fabrication. Including: 1⁄4 scale model with dimension for metal tube frame. Digital file for hot wire milling on foam. Generated pattern design in Grasshopper, and produced files for CNC stitching. Produced files for felt cut on CNC machine using Grasshopper, Pepakura, and autoCAD. Rendered the design in five different suggested environments using Photoshop, KeyShot.
I worked closely with my master advisors during my research who's skills are at the top of the furniture design realm.
Technology has a big role in my design, specially, since the business model is initially intended to be produced and supervised by women. As mentioned in question 12, the structure is carved by a CNC machine to eliminate any requirement of physical handling.
Yes, I Conducted a qualitative Research process to understand the demographic, market and fabrication method.
Then, I synthesized research findings and articulated insights to inform and inspire design outcome, linking research threads together in frameworks to achieve desired design.

A teacher recommendation.
I learn a lot about manufacturing and taking the design idea from the studio to fabrication.
