About Dream Table Lamp

Dream is a table lamp designed to give soft ambient light. The base is shaped like a pillow and is made of concrete, while the diffuser is a blown glass globe made by hand in Venice. Concrete is often seen as hard, cold and heavy, so the form was modeled to look soft, light and warm. An innovative molding method and a very fine grained concrete give the surface a uniform texture with no visible bubbles. The lamp measures 24 by 24 by 14 centimeters and uses a dimmable G9 bulb, so the warm light can be adjusted.

Production Technology
Through an innovative molding method and a particular type of very fine-grained concrete, we were able to obtain a unique shape that breaks the shemes and the usual stiffness of concrete.
The diffuser is obtained from a blown glass globe, handmade by the best glass masters of Venice.
Design Challenge
We were looking for a clever way of using concrete as main material for a table lamp. Our aim was to disconnect from the cold and solid sensation received from concrete.
Project Duration
Development of the project took 6 months and has been entirely don in MrSmith Studio
Operation Flow
The project of Dream started with a deep research on concrete moulding techniques.
We've made several trials for defining the best material both for the mould, the concrete and the procedure.
The final result is a soft looking pillow, with a uniform fine grain an no bubbles visible.
Research
Starting from a deep research on small table lamps, we focused then on understanding which could be the right kind of light source.
Because the aim of this product is not to be a reading lamp, but to be an ambient lamp, the diffused light is the right choice.
What consumers are looking for in this category, is something that can warm up the environment. So concrete had to disconnect from the cold feeling that usually creates, and light had to be warm and dimmerable.
Inspiration
Concrete as a material is always associated in the collective imagination with something hard, cold and heavy. In MrSmith Studio we believe that the role of the designer should be also to break the schemes and subvert the collective imagination, suggesting new interpretations.
This is why we modeled concrete to give it a soft, enveloping, light and warm shape.
