About Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Resort

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a resort interior located in Suichang, a county with a long cultural history. The design covers 483 square meters and places artwork and time-honored objects within the interior decoration, keeping a simple character alongside modern comfort. Local bamboo and green plants decorate the guest rooms and echo the scenery outside the windows. Old elm, celadon and old brick are used, and the furniture is made of locally recycled aged wood that is re-cut and polished by hand. The resort offers city residents a calm and natural place to stay.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Resort by He Zhou represents an exceptional synthesis of traditional architectural sensibilities with contemporary hospitality design, emerging from a lineage of regional building traditions that have long celebrated the harmonious integration of human dwelling with natural landscape. The interior space demonstrates remarkable compositional sophistication through its orchestration of varying ceiling heights, the dramatic gabled timber roof structure creating an enveloping embrace while the expansive window wall dissolves the boundary between refuge and wilderness. The material palette speaks to an aesthetic philosophy rooted in authenticity and tactile richness, where weathered timbers, hand-finished surfaces, and natural textiles establish an environment of grounded warmth. The designer appears to engage with principles of wabi-sabi, finding beauty in imperfection and the natural aging of materials, while simultaneously achieving a refined spatial clarity that speaks to contemporary sensibilities. The tea service arrangement on the central table suggests rituals of hospitality and contemplation that have deep cultural resonance, inviting moments of pause and reflection. The bedside lanterns, with their warm glow filtered through translucent shades, evoke traditional lighting methods while serving practical contemporary function. The monochromatic ink painting visible on the wall introduces artistic tradition into the space, creating dialogue between historical art forms and lived contemporary experience. This environment invites consideration of how architecture might facilitate connection, both to natural surroundings and to enduring cultural practices, how might dwelling in such thoughtfully considered spaces shape our relationship to time, to nature, and to the rituals that give texture to daily life.

Production Technology
Materials: old elm, bamboo, celadon, old brick.
The furniture is made of locally recycled aged wood. Those time-tested materials are reborn after re-cutting and fine polishing, engraving signs of age into the design. Learning from the nature, those local natural materials, the featured bamboo and celadon, are applied to interpreting the subtleties of the furnishings. It serves not only as a presentation of local culture but also as a collision of the classic and the modern.
Design Challenge
The project is defined as a resort manor for urban residents to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the natural one. The designers encountered an array of difficulties and challenges in the process of project design on how to integrate the manor with the local ecology and environment while ensuring a comfortable lifestyle, and how to overcome the difficulties brought by the natural geographical barriers and rugged mountainous terrain to the implementation of the project.
Project Duration
Project duration: from May 2018 to May 2019
Operation Flow
The project site boasts the distinctive Haochuan Culture and Black Pottery Culture, and is the cradle of the Celadon Culture-one of the world's intangible cultural heritage and the world-renowned "Tang Xianzu Culture". Many stories with profound civilization, cultural strength and pedigree connections are worth exploring. Through an in-depth exploration of the local culture, the design team utilized space as the carrier, and abstracted the stories into every detail though technology and design.
Research
The village where the project is located has always been relatively isolated from the outside and is regarded as an "epitome" of the traditional Chinese rural society. As researches on the history and culture of the village continue, many things can be unveiled, including the utmost caring between the natives, architecture and food. The design is significant as it involves what kind of relationship between future travelers and the inhabitants will be built!
Inspiration
The project lies in Suichang, a county with thousands of years of cultural connotations, where Tang Xianzu, a dramatist of the Ming Dynasty who is known as Oriental Shakespeare, wrote the world-renowned "Peony Pavilion". The village is hidden in the mountains and isolated from the world. The project aims to vitalize the village by art and culture. The designers sought inspiration from history and traditional culture and combined modern design ideas to create a natural and easeful living state.
