About Crested Ibis Furniture Collection

Crested Ibis is a furniture collection inspired by the endangered crested ibis. The collection includes a desk, a shelving unit and a screen partition. The forms follow the wings, neck, legs and feathers of the bird. Each piece is 3D printed with a biodegradable polylactic acid composite using fused deposition modelling. Main structures are formed in one piece for stability. Larger parts are printed separately and joined by hidden mortise and tenon joints, so assembly needs no tools. The collection supports biodiversity awareness and sustainable production.

Wei Jingye / 魏靖野's Crested Ibis Furniture Collection emerges from contemporary design discourse that seeks to reconcile sculptural ambition with functional necessity, positioning furniture typologies within the expanded field between utilitarian object and autonomous artwork. This collection demonstrates sophisticated formal intelligence through its modular approach to furniture as spatial system rather than isolated object, each component participating in a coherent design language unified by organic geometry, structural transparency, and material restraint. The technical accomplishment evident throughout the collection reveals careful consideration of form generation principles, where repeating elements achieve variation through arrangement rather than individual differentiation, a strategy that honors both craft efficiency and visual richness. The shelving structure particularly exemplifies this methodology, its vertical rods clustered in rhythmic groupings that suggest natural growth patterns while maintaining geometric precision, the circular platforms providing functional surfaces that double as compositional punctuation, creating horizontal rest points within the ascending vertical emphasis. The modular screen system represents perhaps the collection's most striking formal achievement, its repeating teardrop or leaf-shaped voids generating complex visual texture through simple unit repetition, the offset arrangement creating dynamic movement across the static plane while the layered depth produces ever-shifting patterns of transparency and opacity as viewing angle changes, rewarding ambulatory engagement with continuously transforming visual effects. The dining ensemble demonstrates how sculptural form language can inflect even conventional typologies, the tripod base geometry appearing across table and chairs to establish family resemblance while the oval table surface and curved chair backs introduce softer counterpoint to the angular base structures, achieving tension between geometric rigor and organic ease. The chromatic decision to execute the entire collection in uniform matte white proves both bold and strategic, eliminating color as distraction to foreground pure form, surface, and shadow, while the choice of raw concrete as presentation context provides neutral ground that intensifies the furniture's luminous presence without competing for attention. The collection appears to explore themes of transparency and permeability, particularly evident in the screen system where solid and void engage in balanced dialogue, neither dominating, suggesting perhaps broader meditations on boundary and connection, structure and openness, definition and flow. One might observe botanical references throughout, the vertical elements evoking reed beds or bamboo groves, the screen apertures suggesting stylized leaves or petals, the overall formal vocabulary drawing from nature's organizational principles, repetition with variation, modular growth, and structural efficiency, without literal representation. This work invites contemplation of how furniture shapes daily experience, how form influences inhabitant movement and gathering patterns, and how the objects that populate domestic space might transcend mere utility to become sculptural presence that elevates everyday ritual into aesthetic encounter, asking viewers to consider the designed environment as field for both functional performance and visual meditation.

Production Technology
The Crested Ibis Bionic Furniture Series is 3D printed with single color Polylactic Acid composite. Formaldehyde free and biodegradable, it has high load bearing strength, aligning with sustainable design. Main structures use one piece molding to restore bionic forms and ensure stability. Oversized parts adopt split printing with hidden mortise and tenon assembly, reaching over ninety five percent material utilization and low carbon emission.
Design Challenge
The core challenge of this study lies in simultaneously balancing and integrating the furniture practical functions, structural mechanical stability, 3D printing process feasibility, and sustainable environmental protection concepts on the basis of organic form bionic design that accurately restores the biological characteristics of the crested ibis.
Project Duration
The design had started in Shenyang in January 2025, completed in Shenyang in June 2025, and displayed in the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in June in 2025.
Operation Flow
Designed for home study rooms and living rooms, this furniture series also adapts to diverse spaces like open work areas and entryways. The entire collection is easy to install without tools, just place the main structure in position for immediate use. The modular components can be quickly assembled by hand using hidden mortise and tenon joints.
Research
This study designs a crested ibis inspired bionic furniture series. It adopts industrial Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing and Polylactic Acid material, with one piece molding for low carbon production without molds. The series combines organic aesthetics, practical functions, biodiversity conservation and sustainable design, providing a reference for furniture innovation.
Inspiration
This Crested Ibis Bionic Furniture Series draws core inspiration from the elegant form and biological structure of the endangered crested ibis. Its desk, shelving units, and screen partition mimic the bird's wing, neck, legs, and feather traits, integrating natural grace with lightweight strength, stable load-bearing, and functional daily design.
