About Charm House Residence
Charm House is a residential interior design for an apartment of 82.6 square meters in Taiwan. The home contains a living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, children's room and reading area. An L-shaped entryway cabinet works as both a partition and storage unit, while a frosted glass screen in a titanium plated metal frame lets natural light pass through. Rounded corners soften the sharp angles of the long plan, and the corridor was widened to 160 centimeters for easy movement. Gray and white tones keep the small interior bright.
Louis Liu's Charm House Residence appears to represent a refined exploration of contemporary residential design situated within the broader discourse of minimalist spatial aesthetics and the international conversation surrounding light-centered, material-conscious domestic environments. The design suggests affinities with several confluent traditions, the restrained material palette and emphasis on spatial flow may evoke Japanese architectural principles valuing ma, the meaningful void and threshold experience, while the neutral chromatic approach and celebration of natural light recall Scandinavian design philosophies emphasizing hygge, the creation of warmth and contentment through environmental harmony, and the careful calibration of proportion and detail demonstrate awareness of modernist spatial organization inherited from mid-century masters who pioneered open-plan residential configurations. The compositional achievement of this interior resides substantially in its handling of spatial sequence and visual connectivity, the perspectival organization establishes a clear axial reading that guides eye movement from foreground through successive middle ground zones toward the luminous background terminus, creating a sense of generous scale and fluid circulation despite what may be relatively modest actual dimensions, a testament to the designer's understanding of how perspectival manipulation and threshold articulation can amplify experiential spaciousness. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates considerable restraint and discipline, restricting the primary palette to an analogous family of warm neutrals, cream, beige, light gray, pale timber, with the walnut shelving introducing calibrated warmth and the verdant plant life and floral accent providing necessary organic relief without disrupting the overall tonal unity, this limited palette allows subtle variations in material finish, matte plaster, satin stone, natural wood grain, soft textile, to register as textural events that reward close attention and sustained inhabitation. Technical facility appears evident in the precision of built-in elements, the geometric rigor of the walnut shelving system with its clean horizontal and vertical articulation, the seamless integration of recessed lighting that provides even illumination without visual clutter, and the careful detailing of junctures where different materials and surfaces meet, suggesting skilled execution and attention to craft quality. Particularly successful passages include the middle ground kitchen island composition where the single wooden chair creates an elegant asymmetrical accent against the neutral stone mass, the rhythmic cadence established by the alternating solid and void elements of the left-wall shelving, and the luminous backdrop created by the sheer-curtained window which dissolves spatial boundaries and infuses the entire composition with natural radiance. The formal choices throughout serve expressive ends aligned with contemporary values of spatial clarity, material authenticity, and environmental serenity, the open plan facilitates both visual connection and functional flexibility appropriate to contemporary domestic life, the neutral palette creates a calming backdrop that foregrounds the quality of light and the experience of spatial volume rather than competing for attention through chromatic intensity, and the selective placement of organic elements, plants and flowers, introduces necessary signs of life and temporal change within an otherwise highly controlled architectural frame. Thematically, Louis Liu's Residence seems to explore questions of domesticity, simplicity, and the creation of tranquil refuge within contemporary life, the design celebrates the experience of light as it moves through space and across surfaces, transforming throughout the day and seasons, it honors material honesty with finishes that reveal rather than conceal their essential character, and it proposes a vision of home not as accumulation or display but as carefully curated environment supporting contemplation, daily ritual, and human flourishing through spatial quality rather than ornamental excess. The work may reference several design lineages, the spatial minimalism recalls Japanese residential traditions where restraint and refinement achieve expressive power, the material palette and lighting sensitivity suggest awareness of Scandinavian modern precedents emphasizing natural materials and northern light management, and the open-plan organization and functional clarity descend from modernist spatial experiments in democratized, flexible living environments. One might observe how this interior participates in a broader contemporary return to essentialism in residential design, a movement away from maximalist accumulation toward edited, intentional environments where every element serves spatial, functional, or experiential purpose, and where quality of light, proportion, materiality, and spatial sequence create richness through orchestration rather than abundance. How might this approach to domestic space, with its emphasis on luminosity, material restraint, spatial flow, and contemplative calm, suggest possibilities for designing living environments that support wellbeing, mindfulness, and sustainable inhabitation in an era often characterized by excess, distraction, and environmental concern?

- Unique Properties
- The multi-functional L-shaped entryway cabinet serves as both a partition and storage, defining the entry, reading area, and bathroom while displaying books and items. The frosted glass adds a semi-transparent partition, enhancing natural light and addressing Feng-Shui concerns. To address the narrow space, semi-suspended and floor-standing reflective cabinets create a light feel. The corridor was widened to 160 cm, ensuring ample space for movement even when the dining table and bar stools are fully extended, optimizing the space's functionality.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The project spans 82.6 square meters, including a living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, children's room, and reading area. The original layout had a storage room at the entryway. To maximize space and storage, the designer removed the partition and reconfigured the layout. A small corner by the entryway was transformed into a shoe cabinet with a seating area, while a large wall-mounted cabinet reduced visual clutter and provided ample storage for shoes, enhancing the home's functionality and organization.

- Production Technology
- Materials: laminate flooring, rounded wood cabinets, system cabinets, iron parts, transparent glass, frosted glass, baking paint, wood grain, titanium plated metal, environmentally friendly latex paint, etc. The entryway features a screen made of frosted glass and a thin titanium-coated metal frame. The glass reduces the visual depth of the cabinet, lessening the sense of visual pressure upon entering. In the reading area, the traditional shelves were replaced with folded metal plates. The unique reflective sheen of the brushed titanium-coated metal adds a touch of brightness to the gray and white-toned space.
- Design Challenge
- The previous owner had renovated the apartment 10 years ago with yellow wood veneer walls and layered ceiling lights, which no longer matched the current owner's needs. The designer preserved the existing layout, including the kitchen and bathroom fixtures, while updating the space to reflect the owner's style. The original flooring and ceiling were replaced, and the guest bathroom entrance was repositioned to avoid conflicts with the dining area. Thoughtful design was applied to ensure a seamless flow and align with the owner's habits, optimizing the small space.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in February 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The project adopts a 'people-centered' approach, focusing on the residents' daily behaviors. In the 4.29 square meter entrance, actions like turning on lights, placing keys, changing shoes, and storing helmets are designed to flow seamlessly. The kitchen, dining, and reading areas are connected by a hallway, with a newly added bar and L-shaped bookshelf enhancing the reading space. The open area in front of the master bedroom doubles as a music room and can transform into a yoga space, offering multifunctionality for various activities.
- Research
- The site, an old apartment, is named 'Charm House' for its cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The designer reorganized the space with square layouts and softened raised corners, removing the storage room to create a categorized storage system based on the owner's needs. Light and warm colors flood the space, enhanced by titanium-plated metal and laminated glass for a play of light and shadows. An L-shaped two-way cabinet serves as both storage and a display, ensuring functionality while maintaining the space's charm and balance.
- Inspiration
- The site is long. The project is for a couple and a child. The layout results in many sharp corners. To address functionality and spatial continuity, the designer first divided the spaces into areas using block forms and used rounded corners to resolve the sharp angles. The style focuses on gray and white tones, with light shades as the main elements, creating a bright and fresh ambiance. Emphasis was also placed on storage functionality, with a mix of closed and open cabinets creating ample and practical storage space while maintaining a tidy and aesthetic appearance.
