About Chanba Poly Theatre

Chanba Poly is a grand theater interior located in Xi'an, China. The theater is the centerpiece of the Chanba Silk Road International Cultural and Art Center. The design is inspired by a gem on the banks of the Chan River, and the building appears as a large stone set within the Qinling Mountains. The public hall extends the flowing lines of the building and forms a visual dialogue with the curtain wall. Materials include GRG, artificial stone, metal grilles, aluminum panels, paint-free decorative panels and sound-absorbing panels. The interior joins regional culture with a modern form.

Emerging from contemporary architectural discourse that celebrates the expressive potential of advanced structural systems and computational design methodologies, HONG Designworks's Chanba Poly Theatre represents a significant achievement in cultural building design where engineering innovation serves theatrical and experiential ambitions with equal conviction. The interior atrium captured here demonstrates the practice's sophisticated approach to spatial orchestration, deploying a dramatic chromatic contrast between the cool geometric precision of the overhead diagrid canopy and the warm sculptural presence of the undulating red volume that appears to pour through the space like fabric caught in arrested motion. This juxtaposition activates multiple reading registers: the white steel lattice evokes associations with crystalline formations, technological achievement, and the dematerialization of enclosure, while the crimson pleated surface summons theatrical traditions, ceremonial gravitas, and the rich visual vocabulary of performance architecture spanning from baroque opera houses to contemporary concert halls. The technical accomplishment evident in the space frame construction, where each triangulated panel and nodal connection resolves complex structural forces into visual lightness, speaks to engineering excellence achieved through careful calibration of member sizing and geometric optimization. The reflective floor plane doubles as compositional device, extending perceived spatial volume while creating luminous ground conditions that enhance the floating quality of the massive red form above. Particularly notable is the treatment of natural light, which the architects have orchestrated to create ever-changing shadow patterns across the fin surfaces, ensuring the interior experience transforms throughout the day in response to solar movement. The organic seating element provides human scale reference within the monumental volume, inviting visitors to pause and contemplate the architectural spectacle surrounding them. What might viewers discover in the interplay between structural rationalism and theatrical expression that defines this remarkable civic interior?

Production Technology
The ingenious use of materials is one of the highlights of the Grand Theater's design: a combination of materials such as GRG, artificial stone, metal grilles, aluminum panels, paint-free decorative panels, and sound-absorbing panels creates a diverse texture and layering, seamlessly blending modernity and tradition, art and functionality.
Design Challenge
From the outset of the design process, we closely revolved around two core principles: sustainable development and artistic expression. Merging elements of regional culture, the Grand Theater becomes an authentic representation of the city's spirit. Advocating the principle of "openness and integration, spaciousness and density," the architectural design embodies both openness and depth, presenting the unique charm of urban diversity.

Inspiration
"Brilliant Gem on the Banks of Chan River" – this is the design inspiration for the Grand Theater, unwavering like a colossal rock, resplendent like a precious gemstone. Situated by the banks of the Chan River, the Grand Theater appears as if a massive stone embedded in the Qinling Mountains, harmoniously melding with nature. The design of the public hall extends the building's flowing lines, engaging in a visual dialogue with the curtain wall and creating an animated visual conversation.
