About Capsule Modular Sofa
Capsule is a modular sofa designed for living spaces. The design follows a soft, retro futuristic language, with rounded forms inspired by a pod rising from the earth. The armrests are treated as comfortable surfaces, so people can lounge and rest across the whole sofa and not only on the seat. Capsule is made of soft foam and covered with an elastic fabric that has a three dimensional honeycomb texture. Several modules are offered, so each user can build a personal composition for the room.
Within the lineage of organic furniture design that traces from Alvar Aalto's bentwood experiments through the sculptural upholstery of Vladimir Kagan and into contemporary explorations of soft geometry, Stefano Ollino's Capsule Modular Sofa emerges as a work of considerable formal distinction and material sensitivity. The design appears to engage with fundamental questions about the relationship between furniture and landscape, between domestic comfort and geological permanence, positioning the sofa not within conventional interior contexts but rather within a primordial environment that invites meditation on the deep history of forms. The configuration demonstrates sophisticated understanding of modular logic, wherein individual pill-shaped elements achieve both autonomous sculptural integrity and harmonious collective composition, suggesting flexibility and reconfiguration while presenting a unified aesthetic statement. The chromatic choice of delicate blush pink operates simultaneously as chromatic bridge and gentle counterpoint to the surrounding terracotta formations, establishing dialogue rather than contrast between designed object and natural environment. Technical execution appears impeccable, with the upholstery maintaining taut yet inviting surfaces that model light with the subtlety of carved stone while promising tactile comfort. - Project Duration
- The project started in early June 2024 and the first product presentation happened at the Shanghai Furniture Fair in September 2024. At the end of the year has been awarded during the Guangzhou Design week with the Kapok Product Design Award 2024.
- Operation Flow
- As mentioned earlier, the key features include the flexibility to customize the structure using various modules and the innovative armrest design, which allows you to utilize the entire sofa surface for ultimate relaxation.
- Research
- The challenge began with the goal of designing an iconic product, one that defies trends and stands out from the ordinary. From the initial sketches, we explored soft, inviting shapes instead of the rigid, serious forms that dominate the furniture industry today. The color palette focused on pastel tones, with the first concept emerging in a soothing, soft pink. To emphasize relaxation and friendliness, we reimagined the armrests, traditionally structural and overlooked, transforming them into the most comfortable and inviting parts of the sofa.
