About Bund Wutong Vibe Interior Design
Bund Wutong Vibe is a residential interior design for a flat of 130 square meters. The design combines haipai culture with a customized modern living system. The living room, dining room and kitchen form a public core that extends to resting rooms, a study and storage areas. Arches, symmetrical compositions and geometric moldings are reinterpreted as curved ceilings and rounded cabinets. Cabinets use black elm veneer and high gloss light gray UV coated panels. Countertops and the dining table are made of sintered stone. Handleless push to open mechanisms keep daily use simple.
This residential interior presents a refined study in material restraint and spatial layering that appears to draw upon both contemporary minimalist traditions and heritage cabinetry vocabularies, achieving a synthesis of warmth and architectural precision characteristic of elevated residential design where every surface treatment and furnishing selection contributes to an atmosphere of cultivated domestic ease. The composition demonstrates sophisticated chromatic discipline, limiting the palette primarily to earth tones spanning warm cognac leather, charcoal architectural trim, creamy millwork, and sandy neutral textiles, punctuated selectively by verdant botanical specimens that introduce organic vitality without chromatic disruption. Technical execution reveals particular accomplishment in the integration of architectural elements and furnishings, where recessed ceiling coffers housing linear lighting fixtures establish rhythmic spatial division, custom millwork including the curved oxblood cabinetry with pale articulated panel detailing provides volumetric sculptural presence, and the fenestration treatment through horizontal blinds balances privacy requirements with natural illumination while creating dynamic striped shadow patterns across surfaces. The material palette speaks to design sensibilities valuing tactile richness and honest expression, from the supple grain of quality aniline-dyed leather seating suggesting both comfort and durability, to the cool granular finish of the sculptural pedestal cocktail table offering textural contrast, to the reflective high-gloss lacquered cabinetry surfaces that capture and multiply ambient light, to the warm organic character of engineered wood flooring extending spatial continuity. The spatial organization demonstrates fluent command of contemporary residential planning principles, establishing distinct functional zones through furniture arrangement and material differentiation while maintaining visual and circulatory flow, the curved cabinetry element at right serving simultaneously as sculptural accent and threshold marker suggesting passage into adjacent quarters. This interior invites consideration of how residential environments can balance the competing demands of intimacy and formality, comfort and sophistication, expressing personal identity through material selection and spatial editing while maintaining the timeless qualities that transcend passing trends, ultimately proposing that domestic contentment resides perhaps in spaces that combine architectural discipline with moments of textural warmth and organic irregularity.

- Production Technology
- For cabinets, black elm veneers offer deep tones and natural wood grain to embody calm in haipai culture, while high gloss light gray UV coated door panels are wear resistant and easy to clean, ideal for high frequency use.
Countertops and the dining table, made of sintered stone, resist water stains, dirt, and high temperatures.
Coffee bronze aluminum alloy and nickel plated stainless steel, paired with anodizing and brushing processes, enhance corrosion resistance and present a delicate luster. - Design Challenge
- The challenge was blending haipai culture with modern whole house customization. The project simplifies arches, moldings, and symmetrical compositions into curved ceilings, geometric interfaces, and rounded cabinets, enabling standardized, modular industrial production. Customized storage cabinets also help with space zoning, interface continuity, and cultural expression. These features, paired with select materials and circular circulation, balance cultural depth and technical rationality.
- Project Duration
- The project started in Guangzhou in January 2025. The system was launched in China in January 2026.
- Operation Flow
- The entryway with the shoe changing bench, coat hanging section, and hidden storage system enables quick organization upon arrival. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are combined, seamlessly connecting cooking, meal preparation, dining, and social activities. The master bedroom boasts a walk in closet for efficient circulation of dressing, grooming, and resting. Customized cabinets with handleless designs or hidden push to open mechanisms ensure aesthetic minimalism and easy operation.
- Research
- As a mainstream choice for upgraded living, spacious flats often suffer from fragmented storage systems, disordered public spaces, and disjointed functional zones. Meanwhile, traditional haipai style frequently prioritizes decoration over functionality, failing to meet the demand of modern families for flexibility and practicality. Born from this context, this project creates a sustainable living system that both embodies urban cultural memory and supports the evolving dynamics of daily life.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the rich urban cultural context of the historic Wutong District in Shanghai, the project embraces haipai aesthetics shaped by old western style villas, Shikumen houses, and Art Deco buildings. Rather than merely replicating traditional symbols, it reinterprets related elements like arched structures, symmetrical compositions, geometric moldings, patterned tile flooring, and dark wood furniture in a modern manner, faithfully reproducing the refinement of haipai elegant living.
