About Breezes of Sunshine Residential

Breezes of Sunshine is a residential interior design for a two-story home of 429.75 square meters in Taipei, Taiwan. The original layout was reconfigured, the structure was reinforced and waterproofing was added. The staircase was reshaped within the existing structure so that daylight can reach previously dark areas. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors on the second floor open the interior to outdoor views. The dining area uses blue Fenix panels, which have low reflectivity and resist fingerprints. Solid wood veneers and marble were selected as natural materials.

Within the evolving landscape of contemporary residential interior design, Breezes of Sunshine Residential by CIOU DE LI represents a significant achievement in synthesizing the spatial generosity and material restraint characteristic of minimalist traditions with the functional demands and atmospheric warmth essential to livable domestic environments, demonstrating how disciplined design thinking can produce spaces that simultaneously satisfy aesthetic aspirations toward refined simplicity and practical requirements for comfortable daily inhabitation. The design appears to engage thoughtfully with the legacy of mid-twentieth-century modernist spatial planning, particularly the post-war emphasis on open-plan living that dissolved traditional compartmentalized room divisions in favor of flowing, multipurpose zones that adapt fluidly to varied domestic activities, yet the execution updates these historical precedents through contemporary material technologies, including large-format porcelain tile systems that minimize grout lines to enhance floor plane continuity, slender aluminum curtain wall framing that maximizes glass area while maintaining structural integrity, and modular upholstered furniture systems whose geometric segmentation recalls both constructivist compositional strategies and pragmatic adaptability to diverse spatial configurations and user needs. The chromatic sophistication of the palette merits particular attention, as the designer demonstrates remarkable discipline in orchestrating a composition almost entirely within cool neutral territory, various gradations of gray establishing tonal harmonies that unify disparate architectural elements, furnishings, and surface treatments into a cohesive visual field, while strategic punctuation through natural wood tones and a single abstract artwork introduces measured warmth and prevents the space from reading as austere or emotionally remote, suggesting an understanding that successful minimalism requires not the absence of color but rather its judicious deployment to maximum effect. The spatial planning reveals careful consideration of circulation, sight lines, and functional zoning, with the substantial cylindrical column serving dual roles as necessary structural support and subtle spatial demarcation between living and dining territories without creating visual obstruction or disrupting the overall sense of openness and flow, while the curved ceiling element introduces dynamic movement into an otherwise orthogonal composition, softening the geometry and creating visual interest overhead without competing with the horizontal emphasis that fundamentally organizes the space. The relationship to natural light represents perhaps the design's most significant atmospheric achievement, as the generous glazing along the eastern or southern perimeter admits abundant daylight that transforms throughout diurnal cycles, filling the volume with soft, diffused illumination that minimizes harsh contrast and creates a serene, contemplative quality particularly suited to domestic refuge from urban intensity visible through the transparent membrane, the window wall functioning symbolically as both connection to and protection from the external urban ecosystem, maintaining visual and psychological relationship to the broader environment while establishing clear boundaries that define interior sanctuary. One might observe how this residential intervention negotiates the perennial tension in urban dwelling between desires for openness, light, and connection to broader contexts and equally fundamental needs for privacy, enclosure, and intimate scale, achieving a sophisticated balance that honors both impulses through architectural strategies that frame rather than block views, filter rather than exclude light, and create spatial variety within continuous flow, inviting contemplation of how thoughtfully designed interior environments shape daily experience, influence emotional states, and express cultural values regarding domesticity, materiality, and the relationship between private dwelling and public urban fabric in contemporary life.

Production Technology
The staircase was reimagined within the existing structure to transform its shape, allowing light to penetrate and dispel the previously dark areas. On the second floor, sliding doors are combined with floor-to-ceiling windows, enhancing the sense of openness. The dining area features blue Fenix panels, known for their low reflectivity, fingerprint resistance, and soft. Committed to environmental sustainability, using natural, non-polluting materials such as solid wood veneers and marble.
Design Challenge
One of the primary challenges was introducing natural light into the space by removing existing glass windows. Due to the building's height, this was a complex task requiring careful planning and execution while to reinforce the structural integrity of the walls, adding safety enhancements to the old building. The structural columns in the first-floor living room not only support the floor above but also, through thoughtful lighting design, symbolize the family’s emotional pillars.
Project Duration
The project finished in February 2023 in Taipei, Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The design centers around creating an open and comfortable living environment that seamlessly integrates natural light and outdoor views. It aims to connect different areas of the home while fostering a sense of togetherness for the family. Incorporating elements of music, art, and literature, the design embraces a minimalist and understated approach, using light and shadow to craft a distinctive, poetic ambiance. Drawing inspiration from the local surroundings, the home becomes a tranquil retreat amidst the urban hustle, where large windows open to reveal a serene, stress-free sanctuary, an ideal place for relaxation and a leisurely idyll.
Research
This project involves a 10-year, two-story residence spanning 430sqm. The original layout featured numerous partitions that did not align with the client’s needs and suffered from occasional water leakage issues. Addressed these challenges by reconfiguring the layout and flow, reinforcing the structure, rewiring, implementing waterproofing solutions, and redesigning the windows, elevating the quality of life and creating a fresh new look for the home.
Inspiration
The client envisions a life filled with beauty and comfort, emphasizing the importance of creating cohesive public spaces that serve as a hub for family bonding. They seek a home where children can grow and learn, while elders can enjoy a comfortable and enriching environment. The goal is to craft a living space that combines functionality and aesthetics, blending natural and cultural elements to depict an enchanting lifestyle.
