About Blythe Residential House

Blythe is a residential interior design for a 4,800 square foot house built in the 1970s. The original structural framework was retained, while the layout was reorganized to balance shared areas and private rooms for a family of four. Arched doors and glass windows bring natural light into the interior. Custom carpentry turns former niches into storage, including a pull-out tray cabinet in the kitchen. Corvidae stone, glass and brass details create a warm and timeless character, intended to remain functional for many years.

Berinda Soh's Blythe Residential House presents a refined meditation on contemporary domestic gathering spaces where the choreography of daily nourishment unfolds within a carefully calibrated material and spatial framework, demonstrating the designer's sophisticated engagement with Scandinavian modernist traditions while articulating a distinctly current residential aesthetic that honors craft, materiality, and the poetics of everyday life, the dining environment emerges as the spatial heart of domestic sociability, organized around a sculptural blonde timber table whose organic elliptical form and expressive trestle base structure recall mid-twentieth-century furniture masters including Hans Wegner, Børge Mogensen, and Alvar Aalto, designers who elevated functional objects to the realm of sculptural presence through attention to joinery, proportion, and the intrinsic beauty of natural materials, the table's gently curved perimeter eliminates hierarchical positioning while encouraging intimate exchange, its warm pale wood grain contributing tactile and visual warmth that grounds the composition, the designer's confident deployment of mixed seating typologies rather than conventional matched sets demonstrates contemporary eclecticism that values character and visual dialogue over uniformity, alternating cream-upholstered organic shell chairs with warm bentwood frame designs to generate rhythmic variation and textural counterpoint, both chair vocabularies drawing upon the democratic design heritage of Nordic modernism's human-centered functionalism, behind the dining tableau rises a striking architectural intervention in the form of a slender floor-to-ceiling vitrine whose black metal framework and internal illumination create transparent vertical punctuation, the cabinet's display function transforming everyday domestic objects into aesthetic still life compositions while providing practical storage, its white fluted interior surfaces catching and diffusing light to enhance the luminosity of glass and ceramic objects while adding subtle textural dimension, this integration of display and utility reflects contemporary residential design's interest in curated domesticity where the selection and presentation of objects becomes an expression of personal narrative and aesthetic sensibility, the lighting fixture overhead commands attention through sculptural presence, its asymmetrical brass arms radiating from a central axis in botanical gesture that suggests stylized candelabra or natural branch morphology, the warm metallic finish introducing essential chromatic warmth and reflective luminosity that animates the vertical dimension while the white candle-form bulbs provide both functional illumination and decorative rhythm, to the right, floor-to-ceiling sheer white drapery creates a luminous vertical plane that diffuses incoming daylight into soft ambient glow, the fabric's gentle folds modulating light quality while suggesting threshold between interior sanctuary and exterior environment, beneath the furniture ensemble a low-pile area rug in muted gray-taupe establishes spatial definition and introduces subtle tonal variation while providing acoustic softening and tactile comfort, the surrounding surfaces maintain restrained neutral palette in warm whites and soft grays that maximize light reflection and create serene backdrop allowing furniture forms and material textures to emerge with clarity, the overall spatial composition demonstrates masterful material editing characteristic of contemporary residential interiors influenced by Scandinavian design philosophy's principles of essentialism, material honesty, and democratic accessibility, the careful balance of organic curved forms in table and chairs against geometric linear elements in cabinetry and drapery creating dynamic compositional tension that remains harmonious and resolved, the interplay of transparency in glass vitrine and translucent curtain against the opacity of upholstered seating and timber surfaces generating spatial depth and layered visual complexity, warm natural wood tones balanced against cool neutrals and punctuated by warm metallic brass and matte black accents establishing sophisticated chromatic restraint, the lighting conditions suggesting diffused natural daylight characteristic of northern exposure or carefully filtered fenestration supplemented by artificial sources that together create even soft illumination conducive to intimate gathering and contemplative repose, this dining environment ultimately offers a contemporary interpretation of domestic ritual space where material refinement, spatial clarity, and attention to human scale converge to create an atmosphere of quiet sophistication and welcoming warmth, inviting viewers to consider how thoughtful design choices in residential interiors can elevate everyday activities into occasions for aesthetic appreciation and meaningful human connection, how the careful selection and arrangement of furnishings can express cultural values of craft tradition and functional beauty while providing genuine comfort and practical utility for daily life.

Production Technology
The design of Project Blythe combines contemporary techniques with meticulous construction methods to revitalize a 1970s structure. Through a collaborative, user-centered approach, we leveraged visual research tools like Pinterest and social media to align design solutions with the clients' lifestyle needs. Advanced space-planning methodologies optimized the existing layout, while durable, high-quality materials ensured both functionality and aesthetic longevity. This integration of thoughtful design and material selection resulted in a balanced, enduring home.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge was working within the constraints of a 1970s structure while meeting modern design and functional needs. The clients wished to retain the external structure, requiring a thorough site assessment. Issues such as asbestos removal and immovable IC chambers were hurdles to navigate. Unexpected hidden beams and columns during demolition forced design adjustments. Outdated elements like awkward window shapes were reworked, and niches were transformed into practical storage solutions.

Research
The research for Project Blythe was design-driven and user-centered, focusing on creating a home that remains functional and relevant for 15 to 20 years.

The objective was to balance aesthetics with everyday practicality, ensuring the space supports family connection, entertaining, and evolving needs.

The methodology involved visual research and collaborative ideation. Together with the clients, we explored design concepts and storage solutions through digital platforms.

Data collection relied on Pinterest, social media, and real-life case studies, gathering inspiration for both style and function. Special attention was given to space-saving ideas, such as a pull-out and stowaway KitchenAid tray cabinet for seamless baking and hosting.

The participants were the homeowners, who provided firsthand insights into their lifestyle and future needs. Their involvement ensured that the design aligned with their daily routines and long-term vision.

The results produced a future-proof home that enhances everyday interactions. Innovative storage solutions and thoughtful layouts improved usability without compromising aesthetics.

The insights gained emphasized the importance of adaptive spaces—designing for present needs while allowing flexibility for future changes.

The research directly impacted real-life design decisions, creating a home that enhances family life, social interactions, and functional efficiency, setting a precedent for thoughtful, user-focused residential transformations.
Inspiration
The inception of Project Blythe began with the desire to create a timeless residence that balances elegance with practicality for a family of four.
