About Beverly Residence Residential House
Beverly Residence is a residential interior design located in Happy Valley, Hong Kong. The home covers 130 square meters and contains a living room, dining area, kitchen, bedrooms and a playroom. A large black wooden architrave marks the entrance. Black archways and portals separate the areas while keeping the plan connected. A custom marble fireplace, crafted display shelves and bespoke chairs furnish the living room. Warm textured paint, wooden accents and Calacatta Viola marble form the material palette. Sculptural plants add verticality to the rooms.
Beverly Residence Residential House by Elaine Lu engages the rich tradition of residential interior design that honors classical architectural language while articulating a distinctly contemporary sensibility of material refinement and spatial restraint, situating this living environment within broader conversations about how domestic spaces can balance formal symmetry with textural warmth, architectural presence with intimate scale, and restrained chromatic discipline with carefully calibrated moments of chromatic emphasis. The compositional achievement of this interior resides in its rigorous bilateral symmetry, where the centered fireplace and flanking arched niches establish a classical architectural armature that references historical precedents from Renaissance villa interiors to Neoclassical domestic spaces, yet renders these traditional forms with contemporary planar simplicity and clean detailing that avoids pastiche or literal historicism. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates considerable subtlety, orchestrating a palette of warm neutrals—taupe, greige, cream, ivory, warm gray—that creates atmospheric unity and serene visual coherence, punctuated by strategic chromatic accents in the deep moss-green velvet upholstery that provides essential color vitality without disrupting the overall tonal harmony, a restrained approach that suggests confidence in materiality and proportion rather than reliance on bold color contrasts. The technical execution reveals careful attention to detail in the selection and integration of materials: the dramatic marble fireplace surround with its bold dark veining creates a sculptural focal point that commands attention through pattern and contrast rather than ornament, while the arched built-in shelving units demonstrate refined millwork and thoughtful proportioning that balances architectural presence with functional display capacity. The spatial organization achieves a graceful balance between formality and comfort, where the symmetrical furniture arrangement and centered axis create a sense of order and ceremony appropriate to a principal living space, while the deeply upholstered seating in soft velvet, the layered textile surfaces including patterned rug and translucent drapery, and the warm wood tones introduce tactile richness and domestic warmth that prevent the space from feeling austere or overly formal. The lighting design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how illumination shapes spatial experience, layering ambient ceiling sources that provide even, shadow-free general illumination with filtered natural light entering from the right that introduces temporal variation and connection to exterior conditions, and task lighting from the sculptural table lamp that creates intimate focal points for reading or conversation. The decorative program reveals curatorial sensibility in the selection and placement of objects within the arched niches, where ceramic vessels, sculptural forms, and organic elements like the dried branches in the tall vase create moments of textural interest and visual punctuation without overwhelming the architectural framework, suggesting an approach to residential styling that values restraint, breathing room, and the space between objects as much as the objects themselves. The architectural detailing, including the distinctive horizontal battens visible in the ceiling treatment at right, demonstrates attention to material transitions and surface articulation that enriches the spatial envelope without resorting to applied ornament or superficial decoration. This interior invites consideration of how contemporary residential design can draw upon classical architectural traditions—symmetry, proportion, spatial hierarchy, axial organization—while interpreting these principles through modern material sensibilities and an aesthetic that privileges tactile richness, tonal subtlety, and spatial clarity, creating environments that feel both grounded in tradition and responsive to contemporary ways of living, where formal architecture and comfortable domesticity achieve graceful synthesis rather than contradiction.
