About Base Visual Identity
Base is a visual identity for a brand of Chinese religious goods. The logo places the letter b within a woven structure inspired by Chinese knotting, an ancient folk art associated with unity and good fortune. Repeating woven patterns reflect the cyclical nature of belief. A palette of black, red and gold is calibrated for both print and digital use. The system includes a scalable logo, brand typography, custom patterns, packaging and website design. The aim is to keep tradition relevant for a new generation.
Lance Francisco's Base Visual Identity represents a accomplished contribution to contemporary visual identity design, demonstrating sophisticated understanding of geometric abstraction's capacity to communicate structural clarity and foundational stability through refined formal means. The work engages productively with the lineage of modernist graphic design, particularly the rational geometric vocabularies developed through Swiss International Style and constructivist traditions, while introducing a subtle organic counterpoint that distinguishes the identity from purely mechanistic geometric systems. The interlaced lattice of diagonal black bars suggests multiple associative fields simultaneously, the woven pattern evoking textile construction and its attendant connotations of craft, structural integrity, and the patient assembly of complex wholes from repeated elemental gestures, while the diagonal orientation and rhythmic alternation generate visual dynamism and suggest networked connectivity, infrastructure, or foundational frameworks upon which more elaborate constructions might rest. The chromatic strategy demonstrates notable restraint and intelligence, the limitation to black bars against white ground establishing maximum contrast and reproduction clarity across media and scales, while the singular terra-cotta curved element functions as both visual anchor preventing the composition from appearing top-heavy and chromatic accent that introduces warmth and organic character to temper the angular geometry, the burnt-sienna hue carrying associations with earth, clay, foundational materials, and handcrafted authenticity that enriches the otherwise austere geometric vocabulary. The compositional achievement lies in the successful negotiation of asymmetrical balance, the dense cluster of interlaced bars offset by strategic negative space distribution and the weighted presence of the curved anchoring element below, creating equilibrium without resorting to static symmetry. The typographic integration reveals sensitivity to the relationship between abstract mark and verbal identifier, the lowercase sans-serif wordmark presenting open apertures and generous proportions that ensure legibility while maintaining visual harmony with the geometric mark above, the overall vertical organization creating a unified brand signature suitable for diverse application contexts. The work invites consideration of how abstract geometric systems can carry semantic weight and associative meaning, how diagonal orientation introduces energy and movement to static composition, and how minimal chromatic intervention can create focal hierarchy and emotional temperature within predominantly monochromatic systems, offering viewers an opportunity to contemplate the continued vitality of geometric abstraction within contemporary brand communication and the capacity of reductive formal vocabularies to generate rich associative fields.

- Production Technology
- The visual identity was developed using a combination of digital design and traditional cultural research. The logo and patterns were created using vector-based design software, ensuring precision and scalability. A modern woven-style graphic system was developed to mirror the cyclical nature of Chinese traditions. The color palette was carefully calibrated for both digital and print applications, maintaining consistency across packaging, website, and brand materials.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was balancing cultural authenticity with modern aesthetics. Traditional religious goods often feature intricate, ornate designs, while contemporary branding leans toward minimalism. Finding a middle ground required deep research into historical motifs and modern design principles. Another challenge was ensuring the design resonated across generations, from older practitioners to younger consumers seeking a refined, meaningful connection to their heritage.
- Project Duration
- The project began in August 2024 and was developed in Shanghai, China for Singapore.
- Operation Flow
- The identity system is designed for seamless integration across touchpoints, creating a cohesive brand experience. The woven pattern and color palette ensure immediate recognition, while the scalable logo adapts to various formats without losing clarity. The packaging enhances the ritual experience by balancing tradition with modern aesthetics, making religious goods more visually appealing and accessible for a new generation.
- Research
- The research combined cultural studies, consumer insights, and material exploration. The objective was to modernize Chinese religious goods while respecting tradition. Methods included analyzing historical artifacts, conducting interviews with religious practitioners, and studying contemporary design trends. Insights revealed a gap in the market for a refined, modern approach. The resulting identity system bridges heritage and contemporary aesthetics, making traditional products relevant to today’s audience.
- Inspiration
- The design draws inspiration from the intricate craft of Chinese knotting, an ancient folk art deeply rooted in Buddhism and Taoism, symbolizing unity and good fortune. This motif reflects the interconnectedness of tradition and modernity, aligning with Base' mission to preserve cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary design sensibilities. By reinterpreting traditional patterns with a modern aesthetic, the identity system bridges generations, ensuring cultural relevance.
