About Audemars Piguet Musee Atelier

Musee Atelier Audemars Piguet is a museum interior created for a Swiss watch manufacturer. The exhibition covers 1,100 square meters and is located in Le Brassus, Switzerland, the village where the company was established. Visitors follow a flowing spiral route with a composed narration, and each chapter has its own design language. Sculptures, automata and kinetic installations give rhythm to the exhibition, which is visually linked to the surrounding landscape. Reflections and shadows change with the time of day and the season.

Within the distinguished tradition of experiential museum design, ATELIER BRUECKNER's Musee Atelier represents a masterful synthesis of architectural envelope and curatorial narrative, transforming the act of encountering precision craftsmanship into a journey of sensorial and intellectual discovery. The installation demonstrates remarkable sophistication in its deployment of material language, with brass and gold-finished sculptural elements serving simultaneously as functional displays and autonomous art objects that reward extended contemplation. The curvilinear glass pavilion establishes a phenomenological threshold between interior sanctuary and exterior landscape, allowing seasonal light to participate actively in the visitor experience while the radially articulated ceiling creates an almost cosmological canopy suggestive of observatory domes or astronomical instruments scaled to architectural dimension. The central armillary-form sculpture, with its nested rings and suspended spheres, evokes Renaissance scientific instruments and Enlightenment orreries, positioning the exhibited craft tradition within longer histories of human inquiry into time, motion, and celestial mechanics. The spatial choreography guides visitors through a sequence of encounters with these golden apparatuses, each offering different scales of engagement from intimate inspection to panoramic appreciation. The presence of absorbed visitors within the frame underscores the installation's success in fostering genuine engagement rather than passive spectatorship. How might extended time within such spaces transform one's understanding of the relationship between human ingenuity, temporal measurement, and the pursuit of beauty through precision?

Production Technology
Optically flowing transitions characterise the exhibition. Depending on the time of day and the season, the overall impression changes. Reflections and shadows combine to create a spectacle in which the course of time is inscribed. Visitors experience the rhythmically flowing route as a flowing continuum with a composed narration. Each chapter has its own design language and is introduced by an interlude, a mechanical sculpture or an artistically designed display item.
Design Challenge
Premium Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet stands for meticulous precision, use of the highest quality materials and the best craftmanship. These values were translated into the spacial design and the visitor experience. Creating these innovative concepts and bringing them to life is not only a magical process, but also requires a lot of preparation: from floorplans and renderings to models and planning of technical details.
Project Duration
The Musee Atelier Audemars Piguet is situated in the historical location where the company was established: the small village of Le Brassus, Switzerland. It was finished in June 2020.
Operation Flow
The scenography offers a diverse experience of watchmaking with crescendos, highpoints and contemplative moments. Various sculptures, automata and kinetic installations give rhythm to the exhibition, which is optically linked to the surrounding landscape.
In the heart of the spiral, visitors approach the Complications. They are demonstrated by mechanical installations and give visitors a feeling about the complexity of the watch mechanisms. Eight watches with Grande Complications are placed around the Universelle, the most complicated watch that Audemars Piguet has ever created.
Research
The scenography of the museum shows the milestones of the brands development and related technical innovations as well as the entire design process. This starts from the origins of watch making in the Vallee de Joux, passes over the escapements and the complications by putting emphasis on the Royal Oak series.
Inspiration
The visitors immerse the Swiss watch manufacturers past, present and future. In the exhibition, reflections and shadows combine to create a spectacle in which the course of time is inscribed. Visitors experience the route as a flowing continuum with a composed narration where each chapter has its own design language. The history of the company serves as a starting point of the narration. Visitors travel through the building as they would through the spring of a timepiece.
