About Al Majlis Traditional Restaurant
Al Majlis is a traditional Saudi restaurant located inside a mall in Riyadh. The interior covers 1,570 square meters and recalls the urban character of Saudi architecture of the sixties. Shifting modules form dynamic alleyways and a varied composition of masses. Guests sit and eat on the ground in groups, and each group is given a closed or semi enclosed room for privacy. Finishes include stucco, matt walnut wood, perforated screens and mashrabiya, combining modern and cultural elements that reflect Saudi heritage.
Ahmed Habib's Al Majlis Traditional Restaurant represents a distinguished achievement in contemporary heritage design, demonstrating how vernacular architectural vocabularies may be thoughtfully reinterpreted for modern hospitality contexts while maintaining profound cultural resonance. The design draws upon the rich material traditions of Gulf coastal architecture, where coral stone, lime plaster, and carved wooden elements historically created buildings of remarkable thermal comfort and visual poetry. The facade composition reveals sophisticated understanding of traditional proportioning systems, with vertical pilasters creating rhythmic articulation that suggests the buttressed forms characteristic of historic structures designed to withstand climatic extremes. The integration of mashrabiya screens serves both practical and symbolic functions, filtering light while encoding geometric patterns that carry centuries of mathematical and spiritual significance. The material palette demonstrates exceptional restraint and authenticity, with deliberately weathered surfaces that suggest the dignified patina of age rather than mere newness, inviting visitors into a space that feels continuous with tradition rather than artificially constructed. The chromatic choices honor the natural tones of regional materials, earth pigments and stone colors that connect the interior to the surrounding landscape while creating an atmosphere of grounded warmth. The Arabic calligraphic elements in the deep green color traditionally associated with hospitality and welcome serve as cultural markers that orient visitors within a specific heritage context. The designer appears to have achieved that delicate balance between preservation and innovation, creating an environment that honors ancestral building wisdom while accommodating contemporary functional requirements. How might spaces such as this contribute to the ongoing conversation between cultural memory and modern experience?
