Interviews with Murayama Inc
Designer profileDesigner of the Day Interview
21 June 2023
After studying product design at Tama Art University, I joined MURAYAMA INC. as a display designer.
I have loved drawing since I was a child. I could look at a flat picture of a product, such as furniture, tableware, or a cartoon character, and imagine and express its three-dimensional shape and the unseen underside of the product. In the same way, I think display design is fun and interesting to show various aspects of objects and people.
My design process is, first, to be self-directed and sympathetic to others, second, to think carefully about visual communication, and third, to strike a balance between aesthetics and functionality.
It is best if you enjoy the process of working together to solve problems.
I often use the ocean. Someday, I would like to participate in activities to clean up the ocean. This is also to protect wild birds, which I cherish. I am looking for a tangible way to work on preserving the natural environment through design. I believe that this will lead to protecting the lives of myself and the people around me.
MURAYAMA INC. has a wide range of business fields. If you have a clear idea of what you want to do, please speak up. For those who want to experience a variety of work, please be aware of finding your own rewarding work. I did not have much knowledge of displays when I joined the company. MURAYAMA INC. has the soil to accept a variety of designers.
I am interested in both traditional Japanese culture and Japanese pop culture. The spirit of Japan can be found in both the traditional Japanese technique of "Mitate" and deformed cartoon character representation. Both are expressed by breaking down elements, simplifying them, and interpreting them in new ways. I use this process as a reference for my designs.
Participating in design awards is a positive experience: first, to showcase my clients and my company; second, to disseminate exhibition design case studies and pass the baton to better venues; and third, to be inspired by the work and words of great designers from across the ocean and expand my horizons.
Design Interview

IGAS (International Graphic Arts Show) has always had a beautiful design for venue decoration. My challenge was to carry on the design of previous generations.
We researched and examined the design of the International Graphic Arts Show 2022 to preserve its brand. The annual entrance to the exhibition has a unique air about it, somehow unchanging despite its changing form. We focused our research on creating a continuous structure like the architecture of the Tokyo Big Sight: the venue of this event, and on integrating the conflicting shapes of straight and curved lines into a single form.
We want to connect the baton to the creation of better venues. We want to reaffirm the importance of exhibitions by making full use of both real and virtual spaces.
The design work for this exhibition took approximately one and a half years.
At IGAS2015, there was a red world as sharp, clear, and transparent as crystal, created by overlapping layers of ink, but at IGAS2022, the layers of ink become a dynamic wave that welcomes and impresses visitors. This is how IGAS will protect its brand image.
The design needed to symbolize the enthusiasm of the exhibition, where lively business negotiations take place, without fear of stagnation caused by the Covid. The energetic red color and fluid form make it a reality.
The design of this entrance is very simple, with straight lines at different angles, equally spaced. Japanese minimalism may exist in me.
People in the printing industry.
The fluid design facilitates the flow of people, reducing the stress of moving through crowded spaces and providing healing through beauty.
What we imagined from the exhibition theme, "Venture into the innovation!" was that IGAS, where people's adventurous spirit intersects, is like an ocean, where visitors pass through great waves.
Vectorworks and Adobe Creative Cloud
The point is that 2 conflicting elements coexist. The design of the entrance, combining straight and curved lines, gives the venue a dynamic and organic presence. I believe it is the power of design that can connect dissimilar things.
We worked with people with specialized skills to complete all venue decorations. Such a design could never have been created by one person alone.
We used a wrinkle-free fabric for striped molding which allows the graphic design to show through on both sides even printed on one side. The red colors are all slightly different and the lighting effects provide further color variation and movement. For the foundation of the molding, we used leased system products. The fabric served not only as decoration but also as a fixation for the foundation, minimizing the number of columns. This combines beauty with reduced environmental impact.
We would like more people to know about this design.
I learned a lot about technical skills as a designer, communication with team members, project promotion, and exhibition branding.

As professionals in space creation, we want to provide visitors with a pleasant experience in the most efficient way possible. That is why we must not forget "Less is More". It is important to strike a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Design is my way of connecting with society. Through design, I can help people. It may make someone smile, heal them, or sometimes even connect people to each other. I feel that design has unlimited possibilities.
The field of spatial design is rapidly expanding. The new field is virtual reality, an era in which the insubstantial is made visible. Because the value of design is also insubstantial and invisible, the social value of design should be visualized through more essential proposals and concrete solutions.

I became a display designer because I noticed that the way things look changes depending on where they are placed. I see the potential in the way objects and people change under the influence of their surroundings.

Growth is often a painful process. Don't think of the client's request as a negation of your design. It is best if you enjoy the process of working together to solve problems. Let's not be too hasty and deal with the situation calmly.
