About The Henley Coffee Shop

The Henley is a coffee shop interior in Hong Kong. The entrance resembles the door of a spacecraft and leads into a long, narrow corridor. At the end of the corridor, visitors reach the coffee bar and the main seating area. Plants, curves, custom-made lighting and materials in varied textures and finishes are applied to the ceiling, walls and flooring. Steel, aluminium, concrete, wood, feature glass and fabrics create a balance of hard and soft surfaces. The layout supports a circular flow through the irregularly shaped space of about 250 square metres.

Design Details

Unique Properties
Through an entrance that resembles the door of a spacecraft, you enter the brightly lit space through a long, narrow corridor. As you reach the end of the corridor, you are welcomed by the coffee bar and the main seating area. To highlight the coffee experience and ensure comfort while recreating a space journey within the irregularly-shaped space, we incorporated plants, curves, custom-made lighting, materials in different textures and finishes into the ceiling, walls and flooring.
Inspiration
Inspired by the client’s brand aesthetics, the neighbourhood’s history as Hong Kong’s inner-city airport and the rise of space tourism, we created the interior design of the client’s tenth location in Hong Kong with a palette and a careful selection of materials that align with the concept and the client’s brand identity.
Challenge
Much effort was paid to embody the design concept and a sense of spaciousness into the space, which has curved walls and a comparatively low ceiling. Since there is a void right in the middle of the space, and the design process began before the building was even complete, many edits had to be made to the original design in order to apply it to the space. Last but not least, we took extra care in integrating details into the narrow entrance and long corridor to lead users into the main space.
Realization and Technology
Whilst it was our intention to create an environment that imitates spacecrafts, our team felt that it was important to achieve a balance between hard and soft, warm and cold materials, hence we included greenery and carefully handpicked the following materials to be used within the space: Steel (in multiple finishes and treatments), aluminum, concrete, wood, feature glass and ESG fabrics and paint
Operation and Interaction
The design and flow are strongly connected to the architecture of the space. Given that the main space is tucked behind a narrow entrance and long corridor, we paid extra attention in designing the space for a circular flow: customers enter the spacecraft experience by the corridor, enjoy the brand’s coffees, pastries and merchandise, and appreciate the feature points of the interior design.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in May 2022, and finished in December 2022 in Hong Kong.
