Pure gold filaments as thin as 0.2mm are created. Stacking, piling, knitting, weaving, pinching, filling, assembling, and welding are then used to finish the filigree by hand. Mr. Yuan Changjun, a top Chinese filigree craftsman, created this piece. He has devoted himself to the filigree craft for over thirty years as a representative inheritor of the intangible heritage filigree craft. He holds the title of Beijing Municipal Master of Arts and Crafts. The lipstick's lid is made using modern 3D printing technology in addition to the gold filigree handicraft.It not only carries on the traditional filigree craft, but also innovates with modern technology.
Kev Sib Tw Tsim Qauv: At present, there are only a few gold filigree craftsmen in China. We were fortunate to find a top-level craftsman and work with him to apply this traditional handicraft to the design of the lipstick and jewelry. In this work, the gold filaments are as thin as 0.2mm. The motif and ornament on the surface of the product are made with those gold filaments through techniques including stacking, piling, knitting, weaving, pinching, filling, assembling and welding. Such handicrafts are challenging and difficult to make.In addition, the combination of a lipstick with a piece of jewelry poses a challenge to the design of the structure. The structure has to be cleverly designed and hidden in the work without compromising its beauty. In the end, we decorated the necessary structure and made it into a beautiful decorative detail in the product. From the appearance, the structure and the product are perfectly integrated.
Kev Tshawb Fawb: The use of Chinese gold filigree in this work represents the inheritance and development of this traditional handicraft. This craft is used to make the feather-shaped brooch on the lipstick's lid. Furthermore, how to combine the filigree craft with 3D printing technology on the lipstick's lid has been researched, resulting in a more precise motif and ornament on the lipstick's lid's surface. The gold filigree lid has an openable structure to make it easier to get the lipstick in and out. The use of 3D printing technology also improves the precision of the lid's openable structure. In this work, we investigated how to inherit and carry forward the traditional Chinese handicraft of gold filigree, as well as how to combine it with modern technology, in order to fully exploit the unique advantages of both the traditional handicraft and modern technology.
