About Hyunchul Shim

Hyunchul Shim is a furniture designer and craftsman based in Korea, exploring the balance between traditional structures and contemporary sensibilities. Working primarily with wood, Shim examines the relationship between form, structure, and negative space, creating objects that integrate function and sensory experience. His practice is grounded in a deep understanding of material properties and woodworking processes, emphasizing simplicity and structural clarity.

His work is shaped through direct engagement with materials and making processes. By continuously refining his working environment and fabrication methods, Shim maintains a craft-based approach where manual skill and technical knowledge are closely aligned. This approach frames each work as a coherent system of material, structure, and process.
