FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COMO, Italy, April 23, 2020 /DesignNewswire/ Cava Light Installation by Yingri Guan, designed for ARiceStudio, has been granted the Bronze A' Design Award in the Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design category, A' Design Award & Competition has announced. The award was conferred within the 2019 - 2020 A' Design Award & Competition and was determined through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who evaluated anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.
The Bronze A' Design Award Explained
The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
About Cava Light Installation
Through combining mathematical formulas, cave mineral structural formation angles, mineral composition data, a series of vector images were generated through computational design. Yingri Guan visualizes cave patterns through generative designs. She transforms these data into three-dimensional installations.
About Yingri Guan
Made in China, polished in Singapore, and currently living in the US, Yingri Guan is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Seattle. While working full-time as a start-up designer, she brainstorms and makes art during free time. She is also into traveling, reading, snowboarding, and cooking fusion dishes.
Award Record
This recognition makes Yingri Guan a winner of 2 A' Design Awards. The awards were granted between the 2018 - 2019 and the 2019 - 2020 editions of the A' Design Award & Competition.
About the A' Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design Award
The A' Generative Design Award is an international design competition recognizing good generative designs from leading creators and designers worldwide. It is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to generative designers, algorithmic design professionals, ai-assisted design experts and parametric designers from all countries. Typical entries include algorithmic artworks, parametric architectures, generative graphics, ai-assisted illustrations, computational sculptures and procedural patterns. The awarded generative designs are published at https://dezigners.org/design-category/generative
About A' Design Award & Competition
Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details
- Unique Properties
- This project is generated using mathematical methods to visualize cave patterns and formation. Caves are formed by water going through rocks and deposit minerals through this process. This piece expresses this formation process while abstract the relationship between the patterns in the cave and also different rocks.
- Inspiration
- This piece is inspired by the cave formations and different patterns in the caves. The cave generation is a long and iterative process. It's completely organic.
- Research
- The initial research was carried out through traveling to the mountains and seeing the physical caves myself. I was totally in awe of how these rocks were formed. Afterward, a few sessions of online reading and coding explorations were carried out. Once I have figured out the situation, then mathematical formula was applied to the different values to figure out the actual cave objects.
- Challenge
- During the process, the most challenging aspect was how to abstract naturally occurring visual patterns and formations into an abstract mathematical formula that can be implemented and substitute using different values to create different images.
- Realization and Technology
- This Cava series is realized through, first generating a series of images and vectors based on the analytical processes of the cave formations. Then those shapes are etched onto acrylic glass using a laser cutter. The final process is to assemble together the etched acrylic glass, LED lights and the pedestals.
- Operation and Interaction
- These lights could be installed in houses, interior spaces and so on. They can be installed singularly or in different numbers to accommodate what's the best spatially.
- Project Duration and Location
- This series of artwork spans across 6 months to complete and was created in the San Francisco Bay Area
