COMO, Italy, April 22, 2026 /DesignNewswire/ No. 27 Sculptural Lighting by Mohammad Meyzari, designed for Roch, has been granted the Silver A' Design Award in the Homeware Design category, A' Design Award & Competition has announced. The result belongs to the 2025 - 2026 A' Design Award & Competition and was decided through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who assessed anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.
The Silver A' Design Award Explained
The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
Regarding No. 27 Sculptural Lighting
No. 27 is a sculptural candle created for ambient lighting in modern interiors. The undulating base is cast from engineered concrete and takes its form from a volcano. Transparent heat-resistant glass tubes of varying heights are set into the concrete base and serve as refillable liquid fuel reservoirs. Metal is used only for the wick holders, which limit heat transfer and support safe, continuous flames. The refillable fuel system removes wax waste. The piece measures 56 cm in length, 32 cm in width and 31 cm in height.
Award Record
This recognition makes Mohammad Meyzari a winner of 1 A' Design Award.

About A' Design Award & Competition
A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade organized annually since 2008. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The A' Design Award has a philanthropic mission to advance society through good design by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Entries are peer reviewed and anonymously evaluated by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. The A' Design Prize granted to eligible laureates includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, the upload of a work and the preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details
- Unique Properties
- This design features a modified concrete base paired with transparent glass reservoirs. Utilizing a refillable liquid fuel system, it eliminates wax waste and provides an everlasting, clean flame. The varying heights of the glass tubes create a dynamic, sculptural lighting landscape. By contrasting raw concrete with delicate glass, it offers a sustainable, mess-free, and elegant ambient lighting experience perfectly suited for modern interiors.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the majestic form and raw energy of a volcano, this design translates geological power into a domestic artifact. The undulating concrete base mimics a dormant caldera, grounding the piece in brutalist stability. Emerging from this crust, transparent glass tubes act as volcanic vents, channeling fuel to culminate in living flames. It captures the exact moment of eruption—where cold, permanent stone conceptually meets the dynamic, ethereal energy of fire.
- Research
- Research focused on the environmental and functional flaws of traditional solid paraffin candles, which deform and generate waste. We investigated sustainable alternatives maintaining structural integrity while providing authentic illumination. Studies in material contrasting—specifically engineered concrete's thermal resistance against glass—led to a refillable liquid fuel system. The result merges brutalist geology with eco-conscious lighting, eliminating wax waste entirely.
- Challenge
- The core challenge was harmonizing the brutalist weight of a concrete caldera with the fragile verticality of glass tubes. Technically, engineering thermal safety was paramount. We had to ensure continuous liquid-fuel flames wouldn't crack the glass or overheat the concrete base. By isolating the heat using minimal metal wick holders, we successfully resolved thermal transfer issues, merging permanent geological sculpture with dynamic, safe fire in a zero-waste system.
- Realization and Technology
- Production relies on combining modified concrete, heat-resistant glass, and minimal metal. The undulating volcanic base is cast from engineered concrete, providing thermal resistance and solid stability. Transparent glass tubes function as liquid fuel reservoirs, seamlessly integrated into the base. Metal is exclusively used for the wick holders, ensuring safe, continuous flames while preventing excessive heat transfer.
- Operation and Interaction
- Interaction begins as a mindful ritual. The user manually fills the transparent glass tubes with liquid fuel and ignites the wicks. This tactile process awakens the dormant concrete caldera, transforming it into an active, glowing landscape. The varying heights of the tubes guide the eye upward, mimicking a volcanic eruption of light. Users experience a clean, continuous, and dynamic ambient glow, fostering a deep connection between human, raw matter, and living fire.
