More About Zhong Yuan No. 1 Maojian Tea
Zhong Yuan No. 1 is a packaging design for Maojian tea, a traditional Chinese tea grown in terraced fields. Because the flavor of the tea is light and mild, the package is kept subtle and refined. The tea can is made of tinplate with embossing and gold stamping, and matte and varnish finishes are combined. The capped shape of the can recalls a tea picker wearing a hat. The outer box is made of customized paper and is closed by a shaped belt inspired by the window frames of old tea farmer houses. Real tea leaves decorate the belt.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- Chinese traditional aesthetic of shaping a tea can. The bottle is shaped into an abstraction of capped tea-picker in a geometric way. All leaves are picked and cooked by their hands so the tea comes with their body's warmth or temperature. The outer box is locked by a shaped original mountain, telling consumers that tea is the best and of purity.
- Inspiration
- The inspiration comes from the tea and its growing land, which is natural and an eyeful of green. Another factor inspiring the team is the traditional ancient budding aesthetics. With the hat like cap, the can is just like a tea picking farmer.Inspired by the window frame pattern from the ancient houses of tea farmers, the sealing belt is designed into a traditional frame with the brands name shown, which is decorated with the actual leaves of the tea.
- Research
- As the tea grows in terraced fields and its flavor is lighter and milder than usual tea, the package is made into a more implicative and sophisticated one.
- Challenge
- Inspired by the window frame pattern from the ancient houses of tea farmers, the sealing belt is designed into a traditional frame with the brand's name shown, which is decorated with the actual leaves of the tea. The exquisite techniques also helps to bring a sense of quality of the tea.
- Realization and Technology
- The tea can is made of tinplate, embossed and gold-stamped. The matte and varnish touch is combined and a sense of delicacy is given out. The outer box is made of customized paper and it comes with the idea of less is more. The belt, however, is made with exquisite embossment and stamping of the major icon, Central Land No.1. A simple box with a fine belt, is mixed to lower the psychological pressure on buyers when consuming the product. Yet, it still is a high-end but well-finished product.
- Operation and Interaction
- How to save consumer's effort to look for an ideal product is the key challenge of this case. A distinctive symbol, a bright color, an explicit layout of info and a unitive serial system of package will help Wellmind to solve the problem, where consumers are able to recognize and pick up the products from far away.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project lasts 4 month, designed in Shenzhen
