About Budapest Giftbook Graphic Design

Budapest Giftbook is a flipbook that presents Budapest, Hungary, through a series of illustrations. Flicking the pages rapidly creates the illusion of continuous movement, so the book works as both a printed object and a short film. Each illustration can also be viewed on its own. The book has 360 pages and measures 146 by 107 millimetres. The crest on the cover is produced with silver foil printing. The result is a souvenir, a source of inspiration and a compact guide to the city.

Production Technology
The crest (main symbol) on the book cover was produced with silver foil printing.
Design Challenge
The most challenging part of the designing process was to test and create motion and editing of the subsequent pictures in a way that seamless animation is presented when flicking through the book, but the pictures can be enjoyed individually, too, by the viewer.
Research
For the design the typical symbols of Budapest were studied (e.g. landmarks, architectural elements, cultural artifacts), and for the creation various animation and editing techniques were explored.
Inspiration
The design was inspired by all that one loves about Budapest. The atmosphere, the ambient streets, historical buildings and busy squares. The Danube, a river that is international to the core, divides as much as it connects the two individual parts: Buda and Pest. The cultural impressions (landmarks, buildings, cuisine, nightlife and arts) were the main motives during the designing process.
Project Duration
The project started in January 2019 and was finished in June 2019 in Budapest.
Operation Flow
The design of the book comes to life through interaction with the user, as by his act (i.e. flicking through the pages, something which may be familiar for all from their childhood), the animation and the movements happen. Besides being a nostalgic, interactive gift enjoyable by anyone irrespectively of age, the book also doubles as a practical tour guide. This complex nature granted that after its introduction, the Budapest Giftbook was received with a great success in the social media, as well as by the professional critics.
