About Xiyes Tea Gift

Xiyes is a packaging set for a tea gift, inspired by traditional Chinese hospitality. Four patterns appear on the small inner packages, representing humility, warmth, respect and enthusiasm. Each pattern is formed from calligraphic strokes in the logo, rearranged into images that suggest traditional Chinese cultural figures. The packaging is made from renewable cellulose-based materials, selected for durability, pressure resistance and moisture retention. The outer box has a magnetic closure, and individually sealed tea sachets rest on a cellulose tray inside.

Huang Feng's Xiyes Tea Gift emerges from contemporary packaging design's ongoing exploration of how typographic innovation and material luxury can collaborate to transform functional containers into ceremonial objects worthy of extended contemplation and cultural preservation. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how letterform design operates simultaneously across multiple registers, serving practical identification needs while functioning as abstract visual composition and cultural signifier, a dual operation that characterizes the most accomplished examples of applied graphic design where commercial purpose and aesthetic achievement exist in productive tension rather than opposition. The compositional strategy evidences rigorous systematic thinking, presenting the brand identity first as unified horizontal sequence establishing overall gestalt and rhythmic character, then disaggregating that sequence into four isolated examinations that invite close attention to each letterform's particular formal invention, a presentation methodology that recalls both scientific specimen documentation and the devotional focus of illuminated manuscript traditions where individual letters received lavish artistic elaboration. The chromatic decision to work within severe limitations, restricting the palette essentially to absolute black and singular warm gold, demonstrates confidence in the sufficiency of form and contrast to carry visual interest, a restraint that paradoxically amplifies impact through concentration rather than diffusion, while the specific hue selection of honeyed ochre gold activates cultural associations with precious materials, autumn harvest abundance, traditional tea liquor coloration, and historical luxury goods, creating semantic resonance between container and contained product. The letterform design itself represents notable achievement in typographic invention, each character abstracted into organic curvilinear shapes that maintain legibility while pushing toward pure formal exploration, the flowing contours suggesting natural phenomena such as wind-shaped sand, water erosion, growth patterns, or calligraphic gesture frozen mid-stroke, forms that carry both contemporary sophistication and timeless organic authority, connecting the branded product to cycles of natural transformation that tea culture itself celebrates through its attention to seasonal variation, terroir, and the metamorphosis of leaf into infusion. The systematic presentation in the lower register, with its mathematical spacing, modular regularity, and typographic hierarchy, situates the work within modernist design traditions emphasizing clarity, order, and rational organization, yet the sensuous curves of the letterforms and the warm metallic materiality introduce elements of luxury, handcraft reference, and cultural specificity that complicate pure functionalist readings, creating productive hybridity between international design language and culturally grounded expression. The packaging suggests ceremonial function, the presentation format implying gift-giving contexts where the container's visual and material qualities contribute substantially to the gesture's meaning, where unwrapping and revealing become ritualized sequences, and where the package may be retained as object rather than discarded as mere wrapping, extending the design's active life beyond initial product transaction into ongoing domestic presence, a consideration that elevates packaging design from ephemeral commercial communication to durable designed artifact participating in daily life's aesthetic dimension. One might observe how the work invites consideration of how cultural traditions can inform contemporary design without resorting to nostalgic quotation, how luxury can be communicated through restraint rather than abundance, and how typography can bridge word and image, utility and art, commercial purpose and aesthetic contemplation, suggesting that even objects serving primarily functional ends can reward sustained looking and operate as sites of formal innovation and cultural meaning-making.
