About Wow Long Rice Crust Snack Packaging

Wow Long Rice Crust is a packaging design for a traditional Chinese rice crust snack. The design responds to product sameness and an ageing brand image in this snack category. The packaging shows the Chinese historical figure Zhuge Liang, whose nickname inspired the brand name, drawn in a humorous comic style. An exaggerated facial expression and the spoken word Wow refer to the chewy texture of the snack. The brand name Wo Long was updated to Wow Long. Illustrated stories and product photographs are combined to attract younger consumers.

Guan Zi's Wow Long Rice Crust Snack Packaging emerges from a rich tradition of character-driven food packaging design that transforms functional commercial containers into engaging narrative vehicles, positioning the product within conventions of contemporary mascot-based branding while honoring deeper cultural traditions of anthropomorphized animal figures in visual storytelling. The packaging system demonstrates sophisticated chromatic strategy, employing a triadic color harmony of golden amber, crimson red, and forest green to achieve both shelf differentiation and flavor communication, each hue selected not merely for optical impact but for its culturally resonant associations with culinary experiences, the warm amber suggesting toasted grain and savory richness, the vibrant red evoking spice and intensity, and the verdant green implying herbal freshness and aromatic complexity, a color vocabulary that speaks directly to appetite while maintaining graphic boldness necessary for retail competition. The central illustrative element, an energetic dragon character rendered in confident black linework with strategic white highlights, represents a fusion of traditional iconographic heritage and contemporary graphic sensibilities, the anthropomorphized figure wearing a cap and enthusiastically presenting the product itself in a gesture of offering and celebration, the character's open mouth and dynamic pose suggesting exclamation, excitement, and flavor intensity, while the manga-influenced aesthetic speaks to transnational visual culture and appeals to demographics comfortable with illustrated brand personalities. The compositional achievement of overlapping three packages in fan formation creates visual rhythm through repetition with variation, establishing product line cohesion while allowing chromatic differentiation to communicate flavor variants, the diagonal spatial arrangement generating implied movement and dimensionality that transcends flat product photography, suggesting a dynamic retail presence and inviting consumer interaction through visual energy. Typography functions as both information carrier and graphic element, the bold white and contrasting letterforms achieving legibility across diverse background hues while maintaining stylistic consistency with the illustration's graphic confidence, the angular energetic characters echoing the mascot's dynamism and reinforcing brand personality across all touchpoints of the packaging surface. The circular nutritional badge, prominently featuring a zero within concentric rings, demonstrates transparency in an era of increasing consumer health consciousness, transforming regulatory information into design element and visual anchor that balances the composition's upper dynamism with lower grounding stability, suggesting product benefit without sacrificing aesthetic integration. The material treatment, appearing as coated paperboard with matte finish and rounded corners, reveals thoughtful consideration of tactile consumer experience, the substrate choice balancing production efficiency with premium perception, the matte surface reducing glare under retail lighting while the rounded corners enhance handling ergonomics and communicate care in manufacturing detail, small decisions that collectively elevate perceived value and brand quality. This packaging system achieves multiple simultaneous objectives required of contemporary commercial design: arresting browsing attention through chromatic boldness and illustrative charisma, communicating product attributes through color symbolism and typographic hierarchy, differentiating flavor variants while maintaining brand unity, establishing shelf presence that commands retail real estate, inviting consumer engagement through character personality and visual energy, and encoding cultural specificity that resonates with target demographics while remaining accessible to broader audiences, accomplishing these complex and sometimes contradictory requirements with apparent effortlessness that marks sophisticated design thinking. The work invites consideration of how packaging functions as three-dimensional canvas for storytelling, brand building, and consumer relationship cultivation, transforming the mundane commercial transaction of purchasing a snack into a moment of visual encounter, cultural recognition, and anticipatory pleasure, asking viewers to contemplate the sophisticated creative labor embedded in objects often dismissed as ephemeral or merely functional, and recognizing how design excellence in commercial contexts enriches daily experience, democratizes aesthetic encounter, and contributes to the visual culture that shapes contemporary life.

Unique Properties
The brand name WOW LONG is also the nickname of Zhuge Liang. Innovation comes from the brand-new design of this Chinese historical figure. Zhuge Liang’s new comic image on the packaging removes his old serious impressions in people’s minds. Simultaneously, the surprising word “Wow” coming from his mouth brings the chewy taste and funny experience of this snack food to the extreme.

Production Technology
With vivid illustrated stories and exaggerated expressions combined with appetizing product pictures, to attract the attention of consumers.
Design Challenge
How to make young people like traditional food, how to retain the visual assets of old packaging to the new packaging design
Project Duration
The project started in October 2022 in Beijing and finished in April 2023 in Beijing.
Operation Flow
we made three key design actions that allowed Wo Long to show a quite different brand personality. First, we used young people's favourite comic style to establish the visual tone of the product. Secondly, we exaggerated Zhuge Liang's facial expression to reflect the snack's unique taste of "chewy and funny". Finally, we updated the brand name “Wo Long” to “Wow Long”. Zhuge Liang’s funny facial expression with his surprising word “Wow” provides consumers with the emotional values of happiness, energy and humour.
Research
Chinese traditional snacks - rice crust is facing the problem of product homogeneity and image ageing.
We use the language we can communicate with young people, the way they like to express, to give them a new understanding of wowlong, so that they can have an emotional resonance.
Inspiration
The brand name “WO LONG” is also the nickname of the famous Chinese historical figure Zhuge Liang. Inspired by this, the overall brand design is set to be younger while maintaining the portrait of Zhuge Liang. We redesigned his image with a humorous comic style and replaced the first word of the brand name “Wo” with the spoken word “Wow”. The rebranding of Wo Long is not only an upgrade of a traditional snack brand but also a new understanding of rice crust from the perspective of young consumers.
