About Woman in Power Costume Design

Woman in Power is a carnival costume created to represent the strength of women. The costume forms a fan-like shape adorned with feathers, worn as a statement piece. The pink and purple colors refer to the global symbols of breast cancer and domestic abuse awareness. The sculpted structure is framed with metal wire and bonded using a special technique, then covered with fabrics such as spandex and lace and finished with sequins and other embellishments. Woman in Power was handmade from scratch as a tribute to survivors.

Production Technology

Design Challenge
The most challenging design element is the time and effort to sculpt the design with the metal wire. This took extensive time to carve, frame, and secure before the fabric base could be applied. But the hardest challenge was the mental aspect of converting a dark personal story into a design that is uplifting and vibrant design.
Project Duration
The project started in July 2018 and was completed in Dec 2019 in the Cayman Islands
Research
Design by a self-taught designer from the Cayman Islands who utilizes visualization to map and conceptualize the design. This particular design stems from a personal story that is retold in a manner to represent all women. Additionally, there was research using a combination of internet search and discussions to find the best way to create a representation that could speak to the combination of domestic abuse and breast cancer
Inspiration
This design pays homage to women's battles, specifically those who are breast cancer survivors and abuse. The combination of colors is taken from the global representation of breast cancer and domestic abuse – pink and purple. The design creates a fan-like shape adorned with feathers to create a statement piece representing women's ability to stand strong, stand tall, and overcome the physical and emotional battles associated with breast cancer and domestic abuse.

Design Interview about Woman in Power Costume Design

Test of skills against other professionals, have name on designers' list with all the other great designers like Ralph Lauren, current events relating to environmental issues, specifically destruction of seven mile beach in my own country

I want it to be displayed so that everyone can see it and have discussions about the beauty of our environment and be inspired.

An inspiration

As the designs were sponsored by the Cayman Islands Government, it will be displayed in the National Gallery as part of their permanent display.

This was all me.

I am not technologically inclined so no technology was used.

lack of funds

The competition was brought to my attention years ago by someone I met in Hollywood, California.

I learned a different way of decorating with feathers and gem stones. I had had surgery on my left shoulder and the doctor told me to go home and continuing working on my costumes. I have always considered myself a strong woman and I was able to move pass the pain and this cemented my sense of strength and resilience.
