About Water Ripples Chair
The work is based on the water ripples, and it turns the natural scene into an interactive rocking chair that allows you to sit or lie down on the chair as if the body swings carefreely along with the movements of water ripples. The characteristic of it is the flowing texture of water ripples. No matter indoors or outdoors, especially where there is light, its water ripples will show natural light and shadow through the ground. It's like a ripple sculpture with artistic conception when it is at rest; however, it becomes a fascinating piece of furniture when an interaction occurs.
Situated within the contemporary discourse of furniture as functional sculpture, Kuo Kuo-Hsiang's Water Ripples Chair represents an accomplished synthesis of natural observation, material mastery, and formal innovation that positions the work within traditions connecting organic modernism to present-day explorations of biomorphic design language. The piece draws its formal vocabulary from the universal phenomenon of water disturbed by impact, capturing the concentric waves that radiate outward in a moment of elegant geometric order before entropy returns the surface to stillness. This translation from ephemeral natural occurrence to permanent sculptural object demonstrates considerable technical achievement, as the compound curves and precise edge treatments required to evoke rippling water demand sophisticated metalworking processes and intimate understanding of material behavior under forming stresses. The mirror-polished surface functions conceptually as well as aesthetically, transforming the chair into an instrument of environmental engagement that samples and reframes its surroundings, making each viewing experience unique to its specific context and temporal moment. Compositionally, the work succeeds through its ability to appear simultaneously substantial and weightless, the visual mass suggested by the sweeping curves balanced against the dematerializing effect of the reflective surface that seems to dissolve solid form into captured imagery. The choice to present the chair beside a reflecting pool demonstrates acute curatorial sensitivity, establishing visual and conceptual rhymes between the manufactured ripples of the furniture and the authentic ripples playing across the adjacent water. Within broader design historical coordinates, the work suggests affinities with mid-century explorations of organic form in furniture, while its high-technology finish and precision fabrication locate it firmly within twenty-first century material possibilities. Viewers might consider how the chair invites not merely physical rest but contemplative engagement with the perpetual dance between order and flow that water represents across human cultural imagination.

- Design Challenge
- When making this work, the material has the characteristics of generating high temperature during the process of changing from liquid to solid, and there will be countless small bubbles, but the formation of these bubbles makes the whole work closer to the natural image and effect, and The state of ripples in nature is echoed.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2022 and finished with installation in Taichung,Taiwan in February 2023
- Operation Flow
- To make a chair requires 56 kilograms of material to meet the structural safety requirements of being solid and having an average thickness of four centimeters.
Because the material is transparent, the biggest challenge is how to keep it intact during the molding process without any cracks, because any small flaws will affect the safety and beauty of the overall structure. - Research
- The appearance and structure of this fully transparent chair not only has practical functions, but more importantly, it enhances and satisfies the user's pleasant feeling and comfortable interactive mood during use.
The characteristic and challenge of this work is to present the texture of water.
Because it is transparent, it is easy to integrate into various environmental spaces of different styles. Whether it is indoors or outdoors, especially where there is light, its water ripples will show natural light and shadow through the ground. - Inspiration
- Inspired by Ripples. It presents the image of the condensed state of ripples flowing up and down, just like the frozen water surface, bringing users an interesting and novel atmosphere. As a result of the designer's passion for research and development of new techniques, this work is not only made of fully transparent materials, but the appearance itself has a safe structure and interactive functions. This is a sculpture and a A chair that can interact with people makes users feel like sitting on water ripples, and can swing freely with their mood, adding to the fun of life.
