About Utopia Womenswear Collection

In this collection, Yina Hwang was mainly inspired by shapes that are symmetric and asymmetric with a touch of underground music culture. She curated this collection based on her pivotal moment of self embracement to create a collection of functional yet abstract garments and accessories to embody the story of her experience. Every print and fabric in the project is original and she mainly used PU leather, Satin, Power Mash, and Spandex for the base of the fabrics.

Unique Properties
The designer was brought up in a Korean society where everybody demanded perfection in appearance. Since young, her asymmetrical face made her feel like she was ugly or not up to society’s demand of perfection. That put her in a box where it restricted her freedom of thought and expression. Yina curated this collection based on her pivotal moment of self embracement while she was traveling the world in 2018, to create the functional yet abstract garments to embody the story of her experience.

Production Technology
To start this collection, I self-experimented by going towards the other end of the spectrum of what society views as “perfect” by using surgery tape to distort my physical appearance to lay down the foundation of what I will be creating. The distortion led to the collages. The collages led to the prints which also created the silhouettes to my initial prototypes. Every print and fabric in the project is original and I mainly used PU leather, Satin, Power Mash, and Spandex for the base of the fabrics.
Design Challenge
The challenge was getting the right prints on the right fabric. Every fabric has a different result of prints and has a different approach to sewing. I went through a series of fabric tests and garment prototypes to reach the final result.
Project Duration
This project started in September 2018 and finished in January 2020 in New York and was presented in New York Fashion Week on February 7th, 2020 in New York, USA.
Operation Flow
Some of the garments can transform the shapes by attaching/detaching fabric panels using snaps.
Research
As I immersed myself into the underground music culture, I was inspired by how people with different backgrounds, shapes, colors, genders, and sexuality are embraced under one roof and it led me to a self-empowering moment. I researched its culture, how diverse people live and what they wear. These researches and experiments laid down the foundation of this project.
Inspiration
This project was mainly inspired by the shapes that are symmetric and asymmetric with a touch of underground music culture. Depending on the line of division, a symmetrical shape can be simultaneously asymmetric. It’s all about how you choose to perceive it. Every shape has its own beauty and every beauty has it’s own shape. This project aims to break down the wearer’s restriction for the freedom of expression, and help the wearers bring out their own spirits.

Design Interview about Utopia Womenswear Collection

I started my first fashion job in 2013 and worked for a womenswear designer at a small atelier. I earned my BFA degree in fashion design program at Parsons School of Design.
I have worked in New York, China and South Korea in fashion design, sales and wholesale departments. Fashion companies including Jonathan Simkhai, Lie Sang Bong and more. I had my first collection debut at Fusion Fashion Show in 2016. In 2020, I showcased my first Fall Collection during New York Fashion Week.

I wanted this project to embody my life story and emotions. At the same time, I focused on the garment constructions and fabric prints.

I would love to collaborate with different photographers and stylists for editorial projects.

I started brainstorming for this project in the summer of 2018, and kept developing the design with lots of printing tests until March. Production was done in April 2019.

I like to embody my life story into designs. My first ever collection was in 2016, for Fusion Fashion Show and it shows who I was at that time. I wanted to produce a collection that captures who I am right now. WHO ARE YOU RIGHT NOOW?

All the prototypes are produced by me and the final outcome is produced through a production company.

The best way for me to express myself is through making fashion garments and related products. I enjoy the process of the production. It is fun to combine my inspiration and creativity into a “clothing” form.

Dries Van Noten is a designer who always surprises and inspires me with his collection every season. The beautiful and harmonious color combinations of prints, the silhouettes of the garments.. I respect his work a lot and it made me think of an idea to make my own unique prints for the "Utopia" collection.

Creative people who are driven by heart, people who know what they want, not just following the trend.

Unique fabrics, patterns and the concept.

This project aims to break down the wearer’s restriction for the freedom of expression, and help the wearers bring out their own spirits. My ideal Utopia. I wanted

Some of the garments can transform the shapes by attaching/detaching fabric panels using snaps.

I collaborated with a printing and a production company in South Korea and China.

Having technology, I was able to make my own print on the fabric, and production

I wanted to address the social issue regarding the unrealistic expectation from the society about people's "perfect" beauty. Everyone is beautiful the way they are by embracing imperfections and driving towards an ideal utopia. This idea has initiated my researches on the related social issues and laid down the foundation of what I will be creating.

The challenge was getting the right prints on the right fabric. Every fabric has a different result of prints and has a different approach to sewing. I went through a series of fabric tests and garment prototypes to reach the final result.

I wanted to share my work with the global audience.
