About U a I XR Workshop
Designed to make manufacturing accessible to all, regardless of location, cost, or physical ability, this concept rethinks the creative process. By combining xr technology with a user friendly interface, it enables individuals to engage in manufacturing without barriers. This shared digital workspace reshapes how people connect with craftsmanship, offering broad possibilities for collaboration, entrepreneurship, and new ideas. It breaks down physical and financial constraints, fostering inclusivity and unlocking fresh creative potential.
OJI OSAMU's U A I XR Workshop exemplifies the sophisticated integration of architectural thinking and interactive technology within contemporary experiential design, positioning itself within the evolving lineage of immersive installations that transform viewers into active participants navigating technologically mediated environments. The work demonstrates notable compositional achievement through its deployment of industrial structural systems as both functional armature and expressive formal vocabulary, where prefabricated aluminum truss elements traditionally reserved for backstage infrastructure are brought forward as primary architectural language, their triangulated geometry and mechanical connections becoming aesthetic content rather than concealed support, a strategy that suggests dialogue with High-Tech architectural traditions and the design philosophy of exposing systems and celebrating engineering logic. The chromatic sophistication of the installation resides in its calibrated orchestration of warm and cool light sources, where the amber linear LEDs framing the primary portal establish human-scale invitation and threshold legibility while the saturated blue atmosphere pervading the deeper zones creates spatial mystery and technological sublime, this interplay between welcoming warmth at the threshold and cool digital depths beyond suggests careful consideration of phenomenological experience and the psychology of spatial exploration. Technical facility manifests in the precision of geometric alignment visible in the truss assembly, the clean integration of lighting elements into structural components, the careful positioning of interactive stations to create rhythm and navigational flow, and the atmospheric lighting design that achieves both functional illumination and affective environmental quality. The work appears to explore fundamental questions about the relationship between physical and digital space, the role of architectural framing in mediating technological experience, and the transformation of industrial materials and infrastructure into environments of exploration and discovery. Thematically, the installation seems to engage with the increasing porosity between material and virtual realms, the embodied nature of digital interaction, and the continued importance of spatial design and physical presence even as technologies expand beyond traditional boundaries, the careful articulation of threshold and portal suggesting that entry, passage, and journey remain meaningful experiential structures regardless of whether destinations are physical or digital. The installation may reference historical exhibition design traditions including world's fair pavilions showcasing technological advancement, contemporary museum installations employing interactive media, theater and performance design traditions of creating transformative environments through lighting and spatial architecture, and the emerging vocabulary of innovation centers and technology demonstration spaces. Viewers encountering this work might consider how architectural gesture and lighting orchestration shape their anticipation of technological interaction, how industrial materials can be recontextualized to create invitation rather than utility, and what role carefully designed thresholds play in preparing us for new forms of experience and discovery.

- Unique Properties
- This unique digital shared workshop combining a secret-base aesthetic with cutting-edge technology, offers a revolutionary ui/ux system. A 50-year-old warehouse was transformed into a sleek, ai-managed space where devices like 3d printers are seamlessly controlled via a smartphone app. With xr-powered remote manufacturing, users can create from anywhere, eliminating barriers related to disabilities, distance, or technical expertise. This ensures an inclusive and accessible experience for all.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- The digital equipment stage area measures 5m in width, 8m in depth, and 60cm in height, with a ceiling height of 7m, creating an open space. Within this area, there are 3d printers, 3d scanners, laser cutters, an automated photography system, and remote support robots. Additionally, there is a pc area with 10 high-spec pcs, measuring 7m in width and 14m in depth. Above the pc area is a break area for meals and events, also measuring 7m by 14m.

- Production Technology
- We developed an xr system using smart glasses like the apple vision pro, enabling remote collaboration through visual and audio data sharing. Fully designed and developed in-house, it integrates web and cloud technologies with smart glasses applications. The workshop features a black-themed design, with walls, floors and machines built by our engineering team using diy methods. This fusion of advanced it technology and hands-on craftsmanship creates a unique blend of innovation and practicality.
- Design Challenge
- The key challenge was designing a user interface and system that would enable real-time manufacturing experiences for individuals with disabilities or those unable to visit in person. We focused on leveraging our expertise in xr technology, integrating smart glasses with a web-based system. Through extensive trials, we refined the process by collaborating with remote users, including individuals with disabilities and international participants, to ensure the system met their needs effectively.
- Project Duration
- This project began in December 2022 in izumi, osaka, japan, when Oji Osamu, the founder, initiated the transformation of a 50-year-old warehouse through diy efforts. As an it engineer, a ceo of a system development company, and a leading pioneer in xr technology using smart glasses, he applied his expertise to establish a new hub for it and manufacturing. The facility was soft-launched in december 2023 and officially opened as an advanced digital shared workshop in march 2024.
- Operation Flow
- This facility, located in izumi, osaka, japan, operates as a 24/7 digital shared workshop. Users access the space via a custom app on their smartphones, which allows equipment reservations. The app also features the "takumi" system, enabling remote support and connection with skilled technicians. Within the facility, users can create objects using advanced digital equipment, collaborate or receive assistance remotely through xr technology, and upload 3d-scanned creations for online sale.
- Research
- Through social media research, we identified the needs of individuals interested in manufacturing but unable to participate. This led to four key innovations:
1) Transforming an old warehouse into a digital workshop, repurposing unused assets;
2) Enabling participation for individuals with disabilities, expanding accessibility;
3) Utilizing xr and 3d scanning technology to preserve traditional crafts;
4) Creating a hub for digital creators to develop 3d prototypes and collaborate with manufacturers. - Inspiration
- Inspired by the need to remove barriers for individuals eager to engage in manufacturing but limited by access, cost, distance, or disabilities, this project enables remote participation in creative processes through xr technology. It focuses on preserving traditional skills, revitalizing communities, driving innovation, and promoting new business opportunities. This approach fosters inclusivity, expands access to creative manufacturing, and ensures the sustainability of traditional industries.
