About Triangledex Bus Stop

Triangledex is a bus stop designed for post-industrial cities. The form is based on deconstructivist aesthetics, and the stable triangle is reshaped through nonlinear modeling. Frosted stainless steel forms the main structure, while transparent solar panels above the ceiling supply energy without reducing light. The interactive interface uses a main screen for route and platform information and a second screen for time, weather and expected full load rate. The blue interface tone keeps the displayed data clear and easy to read.

Triangledex Bus Stop by Wenkai Xue emerges from contemporary discourse surrounding the integration of computational design methodologies with human-centered urban infrastructure, representing an approach to public shelter design that elevates functional street furniture into sculptural civic presence. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of parametric form-finding, wherein triangular apertures distributed across the elongated canopy surface create a visual rhythm that simultaneously provides environmental benefits including natural ventilation, filtered daylight, and reduced material weight while establishing a distinctive aesthetic identity that transforms waiting into an experience of spatial engagement. The designer appears to draw upon biomorphic design traditions that trace lineage through organic modernism, synthesizing these influences with contemporary digital fabrication possibilities that enable complex curved geometries to be realized with structural efficiency. The integrated information displays positioned at each support column suggest thoughtful consideration of user experience and wayfinding needs, their cobalt blue fields providing warm chromatic punctuation against the cool metallic palette while housing real-time transit data that enhances the functional proposition. The seating elements demonstrate design coherence through their triangular support structures that echo the canopy's aperture language, creating visual unity between horizontal shelter and vertical resting surfaces. The tapered column profiles suggest both structural logic, with wider bases providing stability, and aesthetic refinement that lightens the visual mass as forms rise toward the floating canopy. One might observe how the design balances monumentality with approachability, creating shelter that marks place within the urban landscape while maintaining human scale through its measured proportions and considered material expression. How might such infrastructure shape our experience of daily transit and our relationship to public space?

Unique Properties
Triangledex, a new form of bus stop, designed for post-industrial cities. It is based on deconstructivist aesthetics and attempts to explore more possibilities. The stable triangle has been modified through nonlinear modeling. The final presentation of a soft yet rigid triangular element gives Triangledex a more sporty feel. In the context of smart cities, more interactive elements have been integrated into bus stops, providing citizens with more intuitive information visualization expressions.

Production Technology
We chose frosted stainless steel as the main material of Triangledex, which is strong and reliable, but also brings the unique texture of the metal reflected from different angles. Above the ceiling are transparent solar panels that provide energy for the product without affecting its transparency. The whole product is divided into universal body parts and cast connectors and combined with screws to find a balance between economy and aesthetics.
Design Challenge
The challenge of our design is that we cannot find a reasonable way in it’s appearance which is satisfying in function at the beginning. After a certain number of sketching and discussing of our project, we finally find the proper selection which achieves the desired effect.
Project Duration
The project started in February 2025 in LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and finished in March 2025 in National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA.
Operation Flow
Triangledex's interactive interface is divided into standard screen and secondary screen. The standard screen displays operating status and platform information, abstracting and simplifying public transport routes on a spatial scale, and visualizing the predictability involved. The sub-screen provides real-time data such as time, weather and full load rate. According to the passenger density data of each vehicle and passenger data of each platform, the data is counted and sorted under the strategy of smart city, and the expected arrival full load rate is finally calculated for visual presentation.
Research
As the concept of smart cities continues to gain popularity, the Internet of Things has changed People's Daily lives. At present, major cities are actively promoting the wisdom of public transport systems, and improving the limitations of existing public transport systems has been developing towards universality. The existing bus service system has several problems waiting to be solved, such as rigid information transmission, opacity, and one-way interaction. The design team decided to re-explore the interactive value of bus stations in public space from the perspective of informatization, wisdom and art. That's the beginning of Triangledex.
Inspiration
Triangledex attempts to preserve the traces and memories of industrial city clusters and eliminate the inherent negative stereotypes of traditional industrial cities. The main color tone of the interactive interface is rational blue, ensuring recognition while conforming to the efficient and high-tech color inspiration of modern smart industrial cities.
