About Three Worlds Handbags
The Three Worlds One Heart handbag collection explores the intersection of heritage storytelling and modern design. The handbags are developed as narrative objects, translating cultural influences from three regions into patterns, forms and color palettes. Crafted from plant based leather alternatives and printed natural textiles, each handbag balances functionality with emotional depth. The collection emphasizes timeless design, local production and the role of the handbag as a personal carrier of memory and movement.
Three Worlds Handbags by Gaja Hanzel engages the rich visual traditions of lifestyle accessory photography while positioning itself within broader conversations about contemporary design that honors both functional utility and aesthetic refinement. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how accessories participate in personal narrative and self-expression, particularly within the context of travel and leisure where carefully chosen objects become companions in exploration and markers of individual taste. The handbag's metallic pale gold surface treatment suggests material innovation and contemporary finishing techniques, the lustrous quality evoking precious metals while maintaining the suppleness and practicality essential to carried accessories, this balance between luxurious appearance and functional performance representing a hallmark of accomplished accessory design. The bucket silhouette itself references a classic form vocabulary with roots in drawstring bags and gathered-top containers, yet the execution demonstrates contemporary refinement through clean geometric simplicity, structured base construction that maintains form integrity, and proportional relationships that suggest both generous capacity and elegant restraint. The complementary soft blue handles create visual and ergonomic interest, their color providing chromatic bridge between the bag's metallic body and the broader ensemble palette while suggesting comfort in hand or over shoulder carry, the attention to handle design reflecting understanding that accessories exist in dynamic relationship with the body in motion. The compositional choice to present the handbag within a fully realized lifestyle context rather than isolated product presentation speaks to contemporary design communication strategies that emphasize aspiration, narrative, and the integration of beautiful objects into lived experience. The maritime setting selected for this presentation carries rich symbolic and emotional resonance—the ocean representing journey, horizon, possibility, and the liminal space between departure and arrival—while the weathered stone support suggests endurance, natural beauty, and the meeting point between human presence and elemental environment. The figure's contemplative pose and distant gaze invite viewers to imagine themselves within this moment of coastal pause, the handbag becoming not merely object but companion in the imaginative journey the composition proposes. The coordinated ensemble of straw boater hat, patterned dress in complementary blues, and the featured metallic bag demonstrates sophisticated styling intelligence, each element supporting the others while allowing the handbag to maintain visual prominence through its unique metallic surface and strategic central placement within the composition's architecture. The overall chromatic restraint—working primarily within a refined palette of golds, blues, creams, and natural tones—suggests design philosophy that values harmony, subtlety, and timeless appeal over momentary trend or attention-seeking contrast, this restraint paradoxically creating stronger visual impact through coherence and sophisticated color relationships. The atmospheric quality of the diffused overcast maritime light enhances the composition's contemplative mood while providing even illumination that allows material textures and surface qualities to read clearly without dramatic shadow interruption, the soft light suggesting the gentle illumination of early morning or late afternoon coastal environments. The careful attention to material variety and surface expression—metallic leather, woven straw, printed cotton, weathered stone, atmospheric water—demonstrates understanding that visual richness emerges from thoughtful juxtaposition and complementary contrasts rather than uniform treatment. This approach to accessory presentation, situating the designed object within aspirational yet authentic context, invites viewers to consider how design choices enhance daily experience and enable personal expression, how a carefully crafted handbag becomes vehicle for both practical needs and aesthetic pleasure, functional tool and beautiful object united in single form. What might this image suggest about the evolving relationship between contemporary accessory design and lifestyle aspiration, between the objects we choose to carry and the experiences we hope to inhabit, between craftsmanship that serves utility and artistry that serves beauty?

- Production Technology
- The project applies a narrative driven design methodology, transforming biographical research into functional products. Textile patterns were developed combining hand-drawn motifs and digital refinement, forming a cohesive visual system inspired by cultural heritage, landscapes, and personal memories. Bags are crafted from cotton and apple waste leather alternative featuring original digital prints. Each form was refined through prototyping and structural testing, resulting in balanced proportions and functional clarity, with shapes inspired by each bag’s intended use and the region where the sisters lived.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was translating intimate family narratives and diverse cultural contexts into a cohesive and contemporary handbag designs while maintaining functional clarity. Developing original prints that respectfully reflect three cultural environments required extensive research into heritage, symbols and color language. Additional challenges included technical limitations of materials, local production, and pattern scalability, which demanded iterative experimentation to ensure functional, durable, and ethically produced designs.
- Project Duration
- The project began in June 2025 in Gorizia, Italy and ended in November 2025 in Sezana, Slovenia. It was exhibited at the local cultural center in Slovenia.
- Operation Flow
- The collection offers versatile carrying options for everyday use. Two models feature adjustable and removable straps, allowing shoulder, crossbody, or hand carry. The two larger bags provide ample space for personal items. Textile patterns appear on the exterior for some bags and as lining for others, creating a visual surprise. Each design balances functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal, adapting effortlessly to different occasions and styling needs.
- Research
- This project is based on qualitative, practice led design research. The objective was to explore how family history, regional cultural heritage, and everyday lifestyles can inform contemporary handbag forms and textile patterns. The research translated personal and regional narratives using visual research, cultural analysis, original print development, material testing and prototyping. Data came from archives, family narratives, field visits, and photography. Results produced cohesive patterns and functional forms, translating memory, culture, and daily life into versatile handbags.
- Inspiration
- The handbags originate from an intimate family narrative, inspired by the life stories of three sisters, including my grandmother, whose lives unfolded across three countries: Slovenia, Croatia and North Macedonia. Their stories initiated an indepth research process into personal memories, cultural heritage and architectural forms, which shaped the overall designs and original prints, translating memories and cultural identity into a cohesive visual language.
