About The Galimberti Exhibition Catalogue
The graphic world of the exhibition catalogue was inspired by the closely intertwined lives of the painting couple (Valeria Denes and Sandor Galimberti) who died young in 1915. The use of individual ligatures in the typography subtly illustrates the strong human connection that made the work of this tragic couple a shared oeuvre. The book was published in two separate volumes, in English and Hungarian. The cloth bound covers are protected by a dust jacket that can be opened into a poster, the Hungarian edition featuring a painting by Valeria Denes, the English edition by Sandor Galimberti.
Andorka Timea's Exhibition Catalogue demonstrates the enduring vitality of the artist monograph as both documentary vessel and aesthetic object, a printed artifact that positions itself within centuries-old traditions of fine bookmaking while embracing contemporary design sensibilities through bold chromatic choices and restrained typographic treatment. The publication emerges from a lineage of exhibition catalogues that serve dual functions as scholarly reference and as tangible extensions of the artistic vision they document, recalling the luxuriously produced monographs of mid-twentieth-century modernism when publishers such as esteemed houses elevated art book production to a form approaching the status of the artworks themselves, employing premium materials, meticulous color reproduction, and considered design that honored both subject and reader. The compositional achievement evident in this presentation resides in the sophisticated tension between container and contained, the deep ultramarine blue binding establishing an authoritative field that suggests both institutional gravitas and contemporary refinement, while the explosive gestural abstraction visible in the reproduction promises visual richness and expressive freedom within, the gold foil stamping introducing classical elegance without succumbing to dated conventions. The technical facility demonstrated through material selection speaks to an understanding of bookbinding traditions where textile-covered boards signal permanence and archival intention, the choice of a saturated blue field both arresting to the eye and suggestive of contemplative depth, recalling the symbolic weight blue has carried across centuries of visual culture from ultramarine pigment's historical preciousness to its associations with intellectual and spiritual pursuits. The formal choices serve expressive ends by creating a visual metaphor for the curatorial act itself: the disciplined exterior architecture framing and contextualizing the spontaneous creative energies documented within, the book as both protective container preserving artistic legacy and as portal inviting entry into an aesthetic world. The abstract expressionist reproduction visible on the opened cover suggests affinities with post-war gestural painting traditions where brushwork became a direct registration of bodily movement and emotional immediacy, the vibrant oranges and greens creating chromatic vibrancy that contrasts productively with the cool restraint of the binding, establishing a dynamic relationship between scholarly documentation and artistic vitality. This work invites consideration of how printed publications dedicated to visual art navigate the challenge of translating three-dimensional, often large-scale works into the intimate scale of the codex, how typography and material choices can either compete with or complement the reproduced imagery, and how the physical book object itself can aspire to aesthetic achievement beyond its documentary function, becoming in some measure a designed artwork that extends rather than merely records the creative vision it celebrates, asking viewers to contemplate the relationship between primary artistic creation and the secondary yet essential acts of curation, documentation, and dissemination that enable artistic legacies to reach audiences beyond the immediate exhibition context.

- Unique Properties
- The graphic world of the catalogue was inspired by the closely intertwined lives of the painting couple (Valéria Dénes & Sándor Galimberti) who died young in 1915. The use of individual ligatures in the typography subtly illustrates the strong human connection that made the work of this tragic couple a shared oeuvre.
The oeuvre is largely lost, which is why no such comprehensive catalogue has been produced until now. The graphic challenge was to present this fragmentary oeuvre in a dignified and monumental way. - Dimensions & Packaging
- 230 × 290mm, 372 pages, hardcover book, cloth covered, gold foil stamped, with dust jacket
- Tags
- book, catalogue, exhibition, editorial design, paintings, blue, gold, fine art,
- Production Technology
- The book was published in two separate volumes, in English and Hungarian. We chose a linen binding because both painters preferred this type of canvas, which has a finer weave. The cloth-bound covers are protected by a dust jacket that can be opened into a poster, the Hungarian edition featuring a painting by Dénes Valéria, the English edition by Sándor Galimberti. Only the name is stamped on the blue canvas with gold foil, so that this simplicity highlights the colourful and exciting details of the paintings on the dust jacket.
- Design Challenge
- To express the close relationship between the two painters, we searched for months for the perfect serif font, which has enough ligature. We couldn't find one, so I created our own set of ligatures for the catalogue, based on the Modelista font.
- Project Duration
- THE GALIMBERTI. The Lives and Works of Sándor Galimberti (1883–1915) and Valéria Dénes (1877–1915) exhibition
10 October 2024 – 23 February 2025, Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest - Operation Flow
- We wanted to please visitors with a removable poster of the book. So that they could take home reproductions of the most important paintings at a larger scale than the book, in almost original aspect ratio.
- Research
- Often, even contemporaries could not tell which of the two painters painted which painting. Today's scientific research, led by curator Gergely Barki, has sought to unravel the differences and to place the two painters in the Hungarian and international canon in the context of a lifetime exhibition. The result of this research is the catalogue, which presents even richer research material than the exhibition in the Hungarian National Gallery.
- Inspiration
- “These two people were like two tall, slender trees, growing up straight side by side, without bowing to each other, without depriving each other of sunlight.” (Jolán Simon)
