About The Flight Of The Razorbill Outdoor Furniture Collection

The Flight of the Razorbill is an outdoor furniture collection composed of a chair, a table and a lighting piece. The collection is made of Fenix, a nanotechnology material with an ultra-matte, anti-fingerprint surface and thermal self-healing properties. Fenix is usually applied in interiors, and the collection adapts the material to outdoor use. The shapes follow a biomimetic study of the aerodynamic body of the Razorbill seabird. Digital modeling and precision CNC fabrication create the continuous geometries.

Matias Millet's The Flight Of The Razorbill Outdoor Furniture Collection represents a significant contribution to contemporary furniture design, demonstrating how outdoor furnishings can achieve the aesthetic refinement and sculptural presence traditionally associated with interior pieces, the ensemble appears within a richly layered architectural setting that suggests the designer's interest in exploring relationships between contemporary functional objects and historicized domestic spaces, the collection's formal vocabulary draws upon mid-twentieth-century design traditions particularly the organic modernism that flourished in postwar furniture design, yet Millet's interpretation brings fresh perspective through material selection and structural innovation, the table's distinctive biomorphic top suggests aerodynamic forms found in nature with its smooth kidney or wing-like contour potentially referencing the razorbill seabird named in the title, this organic gesture balances against the geometric rigor of the tripod base structure which achieves elegant structural efficiency through three legs meeting at a central junction, the visual lightness this base configuration provides contrasts effectively with the substantial horizontal plane above creating dynamic tension between support and supported elements, the chair design demonstrates equal attention to formal reduction with circular backrest elements that function as bold graphic punctuation within the composition, these disc-shaped backs appear to levitate above minimal seat platforms creating an appealing visual paradox of solidity and weightlessness, the material palette reveals sophisticated chromatic restraint with blacks and grays dominating the furniture elements themselves, this neutral foundation allows the pieces to maintain visual presence without competing with their surroundings while simultaneously permitting them to adapt to diverse contextual environments, the matte finish quality suggests powder-coated metal or similarly durable outdoor-appropriate materials that balance weather resistance with refined surface character, one chair variant introduces textural complexity through what appears to be woven or mesh seat treatment adding tactile interest and potentially enhancing comfort through flexible support, the compositional arrangement within the photograph demonstrates careful curatorial consideration with the four chairs establishing rhythmic positions around the central table creating both formal balance and functional legibility, the setting's historical elements including an ornate carved cabinet and classical window architecture provide productive contrast that allows the contemporary furniture to read as refreshingly modern without appearing austere or cold, the warm honey tones of the parquet flooring create visual and emotional warmth that counterbalances the cool neutrality of the furniture palette while the vivid orange-red wall accent introduces chromatic vitality that activates the entire scene, the soft natural light filtering through gridded windows establishes atmospheric depth and suggests the temporal passage from exterior to interior space, this environmental richness demonstrates how thoughtfully designed furniture can enhance and be enhanced by architectural context, the collection's title reference to the razorbill evokes associations with maritime environments, coastal living, and the streamlined efficiency of seabird forms evolved for both aquatic and aerial movement, this conceptual foundation suggests the designer's interest in biomimetic inspiration where natural forms inform human-scaled functional objects, the work invites viewers to consider how outdoor furniture can transcend purely utilitarian function to become sculptural elements that shape social interaction and aesthetic experience, how might the integration of refined design sensibility into outdoor living spaces alter our relationship with exterior domestic environments and encourage more meaningful engagement with the threshold between interior shelter and exterior openness?

Production Technology
The collection was developed through a biomimetic design methodology, translating the aerodynamic geometry of the Razorbill into structural furniture forms. The pieces are fabricated using Fenix®, a high-performance nanotech material known for its ultra-matte surface, anti-fingerprint properties, and thermal self-healing capability. Digital modeling and precision CNC fabrication enabled the creation of continuous, refined geometries while ensuring durability and suitability for outdoor environments.
Inspiration
This project originates from a biomimetic approach, studying the Razorbill seabird’s aerodynamic body and efficient structure as a source of design intelligence. Its flight inspired a language of light yet stable forms. The research also explored the innovative use of Fenix®, whose self-healing and regenerative surface properties echo natural resilience, reinforcing the concept of furniture that learns from nature’s efficiency and durability.
