About Tension Instrument Concert Hall
The project is based on the study of architecture and music. The design focuses on how to take inspiration from intangible music and present it in tangible architectural space. The design ultimately combines the two through "tension", a force that is prevalent in both architecture and music. The concert hall is an orchestration of walls, balconies, and acoustic panels, which are developed from a unique architectural prototype by different scales and tectonics. The dramatic contrast of old and new creates a new cultural landmark for Prague.
Lihan Jin's Tension Instrument Concert Hall emerges as a distinguished contribution to the discourse surrounding contemporary cultural architecture, positioning itself within a lineage of expressive structural forms that stretches from the organic experiments of mid-twentieth-century masters through the parametric investigations of recent decades. The design demonstrates remarkable command of compound-curved geometry, orchestrating five principal shell elements into a composition that suggests both the frozen dynamism of billowing sails and the resonant chambers of musical instruments from which the project draws its conceptual framework. The formal vocabulary engages productively with tensions between mass and lightness, between the earthbound weight of monumental construction and the aspirational upward thrust of forms that appear to defy gravitational logic. Technically, the work exhibits sophisticated understanding of surface continuity, with each curved panel flowing seamlessly from base to apex in unbroken sweeps that reward sustained visual attention. The chromatic restraint of the predominantly white palette amplifies the sculptural presence while allowing atmospheric conditions and changing light to continuously modulate the building's appearance throughout daily and seasonal cycles. The strategic placement of warm-toned glazed apertures creates visual anchors that draw viewers into the composition's depth, suggesting the inviting interior spaces where musical performances would unfold. The contextual sensitivity evidenced in the scale relationship and setback from neighboring historic structures suggests thoughtful urban integration that honors existing fabric while asserting contemporary identity. The elevated observation platform extending from the central void proposes an experiential dimension beyond mere concert attendance, inviting visitors to engage with the architecture itself as destination. One might consider how the curved forms evoke associations with acoustic wave propagation, suggesting that the building's exterior physicalizes the invisible phenomena of sound that would animate its interior spaces.

- Unique Properties
- The concert hall is an orchestration of walls, balconies, and acoustic panels, which are developed from a unique architectural prototype by different scales and tectonics.
The site finds itself nested at the junction of historical and modern districts. Thus, the elements are carefully placed in the site with respect to programs, circulations, and urban landscape. The dramatic contrast of old and new creates a new cultural landmark for Prague. - Dimensions & Packaging

- Design Challenge
- Architectural tectonic and technology has become the biggest challenge. Cantilevered curved walls were achieved in the combination of the steel and cross-laminated timber.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2020 in Těšnov, Prague

- Inspiration
- Tension is a material property that creates both music and architecture. Inspired by Dvorak’s New World Symphony, the prototype originates from a piece of wood bent by a string in tension. The concert hall is an orchestration of walls, balconies, and acoustic panels, which are developed from the prototype by different scales and tectonics.
