About Taiwan Terrazzo Calendar

The design explores the tactile and emotional resonance of Taiwanese terrazzo, translating its material essence into a diverse design collection. The Taiwan Terrazzo Tales Calendar serves as the primary medium, archiving local textures and their underlying narratives into a visual timeline. By transforming sensory experiences into graphic storytelling, the work invites users to revisit the past through a daily ritual of flipping through time worn yet luminous memories.

YING CHEN HSU's Taiwan Terrazzo Calendar emerges from a rich confluence of cultural heritage preservation and contemporary design sensibility, positioning itself within the ongoing revival of traditional craft vocabularies through modern functional objects, terrazzo flooring, with its characteristic mosaic of stone chips, glass fragments, and mineral aggregates set within cement or resin matrices, carries profound cultural significance across multiple building traditions, the material enjoyed particular prominence throughout East Asia during mid-twentieth-century construction, becoming deeply embedded in architectural memory as both practical flooring solution and decorative surface treatment, this calendar project transforms architectural material heritage into intimate portable format, translating the visual language of terrazzo from built environment to handheld object, thereby activating cultural memory through daily interaction, the compositional achievement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of both product design and photographic communication, the arrangement reveals the calendar's modular structure through strategic dispersal, allowing viewers to comprehend simultaneously the protective wooden container, the chromatic block sequence, the illustrated calendar pages, and the pattern card variety, the wooden housing evokes traditional craft container typologies, suggesting affinities with Japanese gift-packaging traditions, Chinese scholar's boxes, or indigenous storage vessels, the choice of pale natural wood with visible linear grain rather than stained or lacquered surface speaks to contemporary preferences for material honesty and understated refinement, each terrazzo-patterned block and card demonstrates careful chromatic orchestration, the patterns avoid garish primary colors in favor of complex, slightly grayed hues that suggest natural mineral sources, the aggregate distributions vary from dense confetti-like scatterings to more spacious compositions with larger fragment visibility, some patterns emphasize tonal contrast through dark chips in pale matrices while others achieve subtler effects through close-valued relationships, the technical execution reveals sophisticated digital rendering or careful physical fabrication, each aggregate edge maintains crisp definition while the surrounding matrices show smooth continuous color fields, the illustrated calendar pages visible within the open box suggest additional layers of cultural content, small icons or illustrations appearing to reference material culture objects, traditional tools, domestic implements, or cultural artifacts, extending the project's documentary and celebratory relationship to heritage, thematically the work participates in broader conversations about cultural memory preservation, the valorization of everyday materials, the documentation of vernacular building traditions, and the transformation of architectural vocabularies into accessible contemporary forms, terrazzo patterns, despite their humble functional origins, carry tremendous chromatic variety and compositional complexity, each unique aggregate combination creating unrepeatable visual fields, by isolating and celebrating these patterns through calendar format, the designer proposes a contemplative relationship to material heritage, inviting daily engagement with cultural memory through the utilitarian necessity of date-tracking, the project suggests that heritage preservation need not remain museum-bound or purely archival but can actively inhabit contemporary life through thoughtful design translation, the photographic presentation itself demonstrates curatorial intelligence, the neutral ground and controlled lighting eliminate distraction while the carefully scattered arrangement balances informational completeness with visual dynamism, suggesting both orderly system and playful variety, one might observe how this calendar transforms temporal marking, an essentially abstract and invisible human construction, into tangible material experience, each month or date potentially associated with specific terrazzo patterns, chromatic moments, or aggregate compositions, creating mnemonic associations between time passage and visual memory, the work invites consideration of how design objects can serve multiple simultaneous functions: practical utility, aesthetic pleasure, cultural documentation, heritage transmission, and memory activation, how might engaging daily with these pattern variations attune users to material diversity, chromatic subtlety, and the rich visual complexity embedded within architectural elements typically encountered unconsciously underfoot, what stories do these particular terrazzo patterns carry about specific buildings, neighborhoods, eras, or cultural moments, and how does their preservation in calendar format extend their cultural life beyond the physical structures they once inhabited?

Unique Properties
The core concept of this work is to show how time is preserved in the unique terrazzo textures of Taiwan, capturing both tactile memories and history within each surface.
It archives various terrazzo textures found in Taiwan, along with their underlying stories. Tactile sensations and memories are transformed into visual graphics, arranged along a timeline. Flipping through the pages feels like revisiting dusty yet glistening fragments of the past.

Design Challenge
The challenge was transforming 365 terrazzo types into illustrations with Taiwanese history. The project aimed to shift perception, repositioning terrazzo from an "outdated" material into a vibrant element of contemporary lifestyle.
Project Duration
The project ran from Sept 2025 to March 2026 at Ming Chi University of Technology, Taipei.
The design is scheduled for public exhibition at the campus and the Young Designers' Exhibition (YODEX), the largest student design fair in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The Taiwan Terrazzo Tales Calendar is a tactile, narrative-driven experience. Users engage daily by flipping pages, where each date reveals a unique visual pattern paired with a micro-story.

To bridge the gap between digital/print graphics and physical reality, a genuine terrazzo element is integrated into the packaging, offering a multisensory connection that grounds the visual experience in material authenticity.
Research
The main challenge lay in the sheer scale of content creation: transforming 365 different terrazzo types into coherent illustrations while incorporating a narrative of Taiwanese history.
Beyond the visual impact, the project aimed to shift public perception. Terrazzo is often seen as an "outdated" functional material; therefore, repositioning it within contemporary lifestyles was crucial.
Simultaneously, a balance needed to be struck in narrative depth, ensuring the story enriched the user experience.
Inspiration
This project focuses on "Terrazzo," a distinctive feature of Taiwanese architecture. Drawing from its unique material characteristics and our collective emotional memories, we have translated these elements into diverse design forms.
