About Stealth Jacket

Stealth is a down jacket that can be folded into a U-shaped pillow. The lower section folds upward to form a neck support, and buckles are adjusted to fit the neck. A fabric-separator construction keeps the garment light and allows easy cleaning. The filling is goose down of 700 fill power with 90 percent down content. The outer fabric is renewable bamboo fiber, while the inner fabric is graphene fiber. Seams are made with high-strength nylon thread and double-needle stitching. The aim is to provide warmth and a place to rest during travel.

Tan Kai's Stealth Jacket engages with longstanding fashion design traditions that position the garment as architectural intervention, sculptural form, and conceptual statement rather than mere functional covering, situating this work within contemporary explorations of volume, proportion, and the relationship between textile construction and bodily inhabitation that have characterized avant-garde apparel design across recent decades. The hooded coat format itself carries substantial design heritage, from medieval monastic habits suggesting contemplation and withdrawal through military greatcoats emphasizing protection and authority to contemporary streetwear appropriations of the hoodie as signifier of urban identity and subcultural affiliation, yet this particular execution transcends straightforward genre classification through its considered manipulation of length, its sculptural belt detail, and its disciplined monochromatic restraint that refuses decorative embellishment in favor of pure formal expression. The compositional achievement resides in the garment's confident vertical extension and the manner in which the substantial hood and elongated hemline create a continuous envelope of fabric that redefines the wearer's silhouette and spatial presence, transforming the human form into a columnar monument of textile architecture, while the belt's asymmetric knot introduces a singular moment of organic complexity and visual focus that prevents the design from dissolving into undifferentiated geometric severity. The technical execution demonstrates sophisticated pattern-making and construction knowledge, as evidenced by the hood's generous dimensioning that creates functional shelter while maintaining elegant proportions, the bodice's clean uninterrupted planes suggesting minimal seaming and careful fabric selection, and the belt system's integration that cinches the waist without disrupting the garment's overall flow, revealing understanding of how textile behavior, structural support, and aesthetic effect must harmonize within successful garment design. The chromatic choice of absolute black rendered in matte finish suggests multiple conceptual resonances, invoking the minimalist tradition's embrace of reduction and essentialism, the monastic and clerical associations of dark unadorned robes, the urban sophistication of metropolitan fashion sensibilities, and perhaps the stealth concept embedded in the garment's title suggesting camouflage, discretion, and strategic invisibility within contemporary social spaces. Thematically, the work invites contemplation of how clothing functions beyond mere bodily covering to construct identity, establish psychological boundaries, and mediate the relationship between private self and public presentation, the generous hood particularly suggesting the human desire for enclosure, protection from surveillance, and the maintenance of interior contemplative space within increasingly exposed and monitored environments, while the garment's ceremonial length and architectural presence elevate everyday dressing into ritualistic practice and aesthetic statement. The design's achievement lies in balancing apparently contradictory qualities: substantial yet fluid, architectural yet organic, protective yet elegant, minimal yet richly considered, creating a garment that serves practical functions while simultaneously operating as designed object worthy of sustained aesthetic attention and as conceptual exploration of textile's capacity to reshape human presence and experience within spatial and social contexts, inviting viewers to consider how designed objects that intimately engage the body carry particular potential for mediating human experience and expressing cultural values through material form.

Design Challenge
The toughest part of this design activity was balancing creativity with practical feasibility. Internally, we faced the challenge of innovating beyond traditional down jacket designs to achieve warmth while ensuring slimness and multifunctionality. From a societal perspective, the product had to be stylish and meet modern consumers' environmental expectations. External obstacles included compliance with laws, production technology limits, and information accessibility.
Project Duration
The project began in Shenzhen, China in December 2022, and concluded in Shenzhen, China in December 2023. It became available for sale on major e-commerce platforms and in offline stores starting in April 2024.
Operation Flow
This down jacket is designed for comfort and ease. Simply fold the jacket upward from the bottom to quickly transform it into a U-shaped pillow, perfect for resting during travels. Adjust the buckles to fit your neck size for personalized support. For the best experience, make sure to adjust the buckles correctly before use and follow care instructions when cleaning. This design excels because it offers warmth along with convenience for those who want to rest on the go.
Research
We conducted a design study aimed at developing a product that combines the functions of a down jacket and a U-shaped pillow. Through market research, user interviews, and prototype testing, we gathered feedback from travelers. Using design software and 3D printing technology, we created prototypes that participants tested and provided suggestions for improvement. The results showed that this design is not only warm but can also easily transform into a comfortable U-shaped pillow. This highlights the importance of user experience and opens new market opportunities with an eco-friendly and practical product.
Inspiration
The Stealth U Pillow Down Jacket was inspired by the need for multifunctional, portable outerwear. We integrated a down jacket with a U-shaped pillow to provide warmth and comfort, addressing the bulkiness of traditional jackets. Our unique fabric-separator technology ensures lightweight, compact folding, and superior insulation. Advanced materials enhance performance and sustainability.
