About Squirll Application
Squirll is a personal finance application designed for mobile and web use. Squirll allows users to track spending, set goals, and follow their progress towards financial targets. Receipts are logged by camera or by manual entry, and image recognition converts printed receipts into digital records with automatic categorisation. Natural language processing supports a chatbot that answers questions about spending in everyday language and highlights trends and saving opportunities. The interface uses a minimal dark theme with high-contrast charts.
Maria Borysova's Squirll Application emerges from the evolving tradition of user-centered financial technology design, a domain where visual clarity, informational hierarchy, and psychological reassurance converge to transform potentially anxiety-inducing subject matter such as personal spending analysis into approachable, even aesthetically pleasing daily interaction, situating this work within the broader cultural movement toward financial wellness tools that democratize access to sophisticated money management previously available only through professional financial advisors or complex desktop software. The dual-screen presentation format demonstrates notable compositional intelligence, recognizing that contemporary users inhabit multiple contexts within a single application ecosystem and require seamless navigation between analytical overview and transactional detail, between quantitative assessment and qualitative communication, the left screen's Analytics dashboard offering the bird's-eye perspective through its elegantly rendered spending graph and category breakdown while the right screen's Messages interface grounds the user experience in specific merchant relationships and timely communications that provide actionable context for the aggregate data. The chromatic accomplishment merits particular attention, as the designer has resisted the common temptation toward either excessive colorfulness that can overwhelm cognitive processing or austere monochromaticism that can feel cold and uninviting, instead selecting a refined triadic harmony of cobalt blue suggesting stability and trust, warm orange-amber range evoking optimism and energy, and strategic vermillion red deployed sparingly for accent and urgency, all anchored by the sophisticated charcoal-to-black neutral foundation that provides both visual luxury through its depth and practical benefit through reduced eye strain during extended viewing sessions characteristic of dark mode interfaces. The line graph's execution demonstrates technical facility in balancing aesthetic appeal with data integrity, the warm burnt sienna stroke creating an organic meandering path across the seven-day timeline that feels approachable rather than clinically precise, the labeled data points providing exact numerical transparency while the connecting lines suggest narrative flow and temporal continuity, inviting users to perceive their spending not as isolated failures or successes but as an evolving story they author through daily choices. The donut chart below achieves particularly successful visual communication through its clear segmentation, generous central aperture that prevents visual weight from overwhelming the composition, and the subtle plus-sign interactive indicators that promise deeper exploration without cluttering the overview with excessive detail, the $2,000 total figure presented in crisp white against the black core commanding immediate comprehension while the surrounding color-coded segments provide categorical nuance for those seeking granular understanding. The Messages interface demonstrates equally thoughtful formal choices in its vertical card stacking rhythm, each preview maintaining consistent height and internal padding that creates predictable scanning pattern, the timestamps aligned right establishing subtle visual anchor, the preview text truncated with ellipses that honestly signal incompleteness while providing sufficient context for prioritization decisions, and the Jay & Co header with its simple geometric avatar creating memorable brand presence through minimal means, the upward-pointing red triangle perhaps suggesting aspiration, growth, or simply serving as distinctive visual marker in a crowded mental landscape of daily notifications. Thematically, this work invites contemplation of how digital tools increasingly shape our relationship with abstract concepts like money, spending, and financial health, translating numerical abstractions into visual forms that engage aesthetic perception alongside rational analysis, and how the design choices made in these mediating interfaces carry profound implications for user behavior, emotional response, and ultimately financial outcomes, as an interface that makes spending data accessible and non-threatening may encourage more frequent engagement with personal finance management than one that presents the same information through intimidating spreadsheets or guilt-inducing red warning indicators. The dark mode aesthetic itself carries symbolic weight within contemporary digital culture, suggesting sophistication, reduced environmental impact through lower screen energy consumption, and membership in a community of users who prioritize both practical ergonomics and aesthetic refinement, while the overall compositional restraint and generous white space allocation signal respect for user attention and cognitive capacity in an increasingly cluttered digital landscape. How might the visual languages we develop for financial interfaces shape not only our individual money management practices but our broader cultural relationship with wealth, spending, and financial transparency in an era of increasing economic complexity?

- Production Technology
- The app uses the leading AI technologies such as image recognition and natural language processing. Image recognition enables accurate receipt scanning and automatic categorization of expenses, reducing manual input and improving data accuracy. Natural language processing powers the interactive assistant, allowing users to ask questions about their spending, receive personalized insights, and set financial goals using everyday language.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge was to design an experience that empowers users to quickly analyze spending and make optimal financial decisions using AI. We addressed this by introducing smart summaries, clean visualizations, and a conversational chatbot that simplifies complex data.
This integrated AI assistant serves as both a guide and a dynamic reporting tool, monitoring spending to highlight unusual activity and savings opportunities in real time. By translating technical analysis into actionable, plain language insights, the chatbot reduces the mental burden of money management and supports more informed decision making. - Project Duration
- The project was designed in London and went live in 2025.
- Operation Flow
- Users log their receipts using camera or manual entry, the system analyzes and transforms print receipts into digital. Using AI, the system provides insights about trends and spending patterns for the individual user, highlighting potential tax refunds, expiring warranties, and opportunities to optimize future purchases.
- Research
- We conducted research to address the stress and confusion many adults face in everyday money management. Through interviews, market research, and usability tests, we uncovered key challenges like information overload, inconsistent saving habits, and emotional fatigue around finances. Insights revealed a strong need for intuitive, personalized tools that ease decision making and build confidence over time. These findings shaped Squirll’s conversational design, smart nudges, and emotionally aware feedback.
